This course will discuss the principal changes in pedagogy and how it affects institutional design. The evolution of pedagogy can be summarized by the following four principals: Learning is at its best constructivist, experimental, connected, and lifeline and informal. Using these principals we will explore different case studies of contemporary institutional design (k-12 and higher education), and see how these changes in pedagogy affect the way students learn , teachers teach, and architects and designers design.

A first for the AEC Industry, the AEC Hackathon is a non-profit event that brings together teams of Silicon Valley technologists and industry stakeholders to help shape the future of our built environment. Formatted as a traditional “hack”, the AEC Hackathon provides a playful, exploratory environment where disruption, innovation, and creative ideas are brought to life.
The focus of the event is not on technology for technology’s sake, but to hack into traditional processes and workflows of the AEC industry to generate innovation. This can be eventually be applied into global solutions.

The Battle of Ideas is an annual, weekend-long series of panel discussions hosted at the Barbican in London, ranging across subjects from neuroscience to music and everything in between. With a strong thread of architecture and urbanism, this year offered a spectacular chance to probe the popular trends and fads in today’s design culture.

From November 22 through March 2, 2014, the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University presents Lebbeus Woods, Architect, bringing together over 100 works from the past 35 years by one of the most influential architects working in the field. Recognized beyond architecture, Lebbeus Woods (1940–2012), who was born in Lansing, Michigan, has been hailed by leading designers, filmmakers, writers, and artists alike as a significant voice in recent decades. Notably, Zaha Hadid, architect of the Broad’s newly inaugurated building, cities Woods as a key influence.
“Lebbeus was a very close friend and great architect. His visionary work explored the fantastic potential and dynamism of space with radical proposals and powerful drawings that were extremely influential,” says Hadid.
Woods’ works resonate across many disciplines for their conceptual potency, imaginative breadth, jarring poetry, and ethical depth. On view in the Broad’s own visionary spaces, Lebbeus Woods, Architect offers compelling insight into the infinite potential of profound architectures, whether real or imagined, to inflect our lived experience. This travelling exhibition features drawings and models from major national and international collections including San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), MoMA, the Whitney, MAK Vienna, and the Getty Research Institute.

Isay Weinfeld, the multi-award winning Brazilian architect and designer, will be opening his first ever US exhibit at Espasso in conjunction with the launch of a new monograph that takes a closer look at his recent projects.
Isay is behind some of Brazil’s most visionary buildings and this year marks his 40th year practicing architecture. Over the last few years he has designed the award-winning 360° Building, the Fasano Porto Feliz, winner of Interior Design’s award for best resort hotel, numerous retail spaces along the Rua Oscar Freire and stunning residential projects that showcase contemporary art. The A to Z exhibit is being premiered in the US at Espasso and also serves as the launch for the monograph titled Isay Weinfeld.
The Buckminster Fuller Institute (BFI) is proud to partner with The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture of The Cooper Union and The Cooper Union Institute for Sustainable Design to exhibit DYMAX REDUX, a crowdsourcing design contest to highlight today’s graphic designers, visual artists and citizen cartographers own interpretation of Buckminster Fuller’s Dymaxion Map. Originally published 70 years ago, Fuller’s map was a cartographic breakthrough showing one island in one ocean; an iconic design that has inspired generations since.
The exhibit will feature mounted prints of all 11 finalists from the DYMAX REDUX contest, whose submissions offer a variety of beautifully original, informative and radical projections onto the Dymaxion world map. By using map as canvas these finalists explore a range of topics including deforestation, climate and atmospheric conditions, historic events, migration routes, water use, gun violence, urbanization, time zones and even lunar topography. Also exhibited will be a selection of Fuller’s own maps to provide background and context for the project.

As part of the Architecture Week in Madrid, the “Past, Present and Future of Sol” exhibition was inaugurated and the brief for the International Ideas Competition was publicated.
PIENSA SOL is a reflection about the future of Madrid’s Puerta del Sol plaza. Its objective is to compile proposals through an international ideas competition to profile the path of its evolution looking to improve the Puerta del Sol context. To get to this objective PIENSA SOL is planned in a structured process base in four complementary phases: COMPETITION, EXHIBITION, CITIZEN PARTICIPATION AND REFLECTION.
Now in its 5th edition, the Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism/Architecture (UABB) is the only biennial exhibition in the world to be based exclusively on the themes of urbanism and urbanization and is co-organized by Shenzhen and Hong Kong, making it one of the most important events on its type in the region.
The UABB has developed strong alliances with partners both local, regional and from all over the world. Among them include globally renowned cultural institutions like Victoria & Albert Museum (V&A), MAXXI, OMA, Droog Design, International Architecture Biennale of São Paulo, MIT, MoMA New York, and The Berlage.
The curator for this year is Ole Bouman, and amajor attraction of the 2013 Shenzhen Biennale is the creative and dramatic transformation of an old Shenzhen glass factory into one of the Biennale’s core venues for this year. Spearheaded by Ole Bouman, the UABB’s curator and creative director, the project adhered to his manifesto statement of “Biennale as risk.” The revitalisation effort not only provides a unique and functional exhibition space for the Biennale but it reclaims a piece of heritage and history. As a broader objective, the makeover is also a step in redefining Shenzhen’s identity. In completing the urban intervention, Mr. Bouman now calls it a ‘Value Factory’ to manufacture ideas and knowledge.

In light of the strong responses to their Lodge on the Lake competition, organized in collaboration with the University of Canberra and won by Henry Stephens, Nick Roberts and Jack Davies in May, the Gallery of Australian Design is hosting an exhibition of the submissions to the competition, including models of the entries created specially created for the exhibition.
Currently on view at the FRAC Centre in Orléans, ArchiLab 2013 introduces the latest progress in terms of research in digital architecture and its interaction with the sciences, permitted by the simulation of growth phenomena in the living world.
The problematics of ArchiLab 2013, involving digital architecture and the sciences, will be broached at an international symposium which will bring together ten exhibited architects. They will present their latest research, dealing with changes occurring in the very concept of nature and ecology.
On October 23, 2013, Tel Aviv’s Ermanno Tedeschi Gallery will open its newest show, “Never Say the Eye Is Rigid: Architectural Drawings of Daniel Libeskind”. The exhibition, in collaboration with the Ermanno Tedeschi Gallery (Milan, Turin, Rome ,Tel Aviv), which brings together 52 original drawings will include depictions of the architect’s signature work, the Jewish Museum Berlin (2001), and his 2003 master plan for Ground Zero in New York City.
The exhibition arrives in Tel Aviv after opening at the Ermanno Tedeschi Gallery in Rome and in Turin. From Tel Aviv the show will travel to the Ermanno Tedeschi Gallery in Milan then travel to London and to New York City (location and dates to be announced). The exhibition in Tel Aviv will show some sketches exposed in Italy and other new projects.
The sketches reflect a wide range of styles and techniques and range from almost-classical line drawings to highly expressive watercolors and free-flowing ink sketches. All of the works reflect a connection between the philosophical ideas underlying the project depicted and that project’s unique aesthetics – its particular color, mood, posture and tension. From the extremely large scroll depicting the Ground Zero master plan to the intimate sketches of the Jewish Museum Berlin, the drawings offer a rare and intriguing glimpse into Mr. Libeskind’s approach to some of his most famous projects. On November 8, Philips and Parsons The New School for Design will bring together architects, lighting designers and researchers for a symposium on the dualistic relationship between natural light and the latest electric lighting technologies, and the influence these systems have on human well being. The event is part of Luminous Talks, a programming series now in its second year, which was developed by Philips and Parsons to inspire dialogue around relevant topics in the field. This year’s theme, Nature and Man-Made, builds on last year’s focus on human health and well being to consider the human presence amidst these forces and their psychological and physiological impact.

All too often when it comes to the issue of women disappearing from the architecture profession, the question is: why? But perhaps we really should be asking: how? How can we keep women in the profession? How can more women advance to positions of power? And how can women start earning the money they deserve?
Well, the best way for women to start earning more, is to start asking for it – and from the very beginning. With this in mind, ArchiteXX (“we ask how not Y”) is pairing up with the Wage Project, an organization dedicated to educating women about the importance of learning how to negotiate better salaries, to host two workshops in New York City on October 19th (one from 1pm – 3pm and the other at 3:30pm – 5:30pm).
ArchiteXX, whose web site will be launching soon, is the new name of “Women In Architecture,” a group dedicated to transforming the architecture profession for women. It’s co-founders are Nina Freedman, the Director of Projects for Shigeru Ban Architects, and Lori Brown, an architect, author and associate professor at Syracuse University.
The conference will focus on Peter Eisenman’s long and outstanding oeuvre.Thematization of almost 50 years of his theoretical and educational work and almost 25 years of his full-time architectural practice is seen here as vital to the understanding of both the past and the presence of contemporary architecture. From the questions related to Renaissance heritage to the problems associated with disciplinary autonomy and the digital, the conference aims to provide a space for a critical debate among architects and theorists.
Built upon our previous experiences with the Architecture of Deconstruction / The Specter of Jacques Derrida, this year’s conference will provide a new and challenging form of interaction. It will disconnect from the standard model for scientific gatherings – session presentations followed by short discussion between participants. Conference will indeed be organized in several sessions, but as a form of thematic conversations with Peter Eisenman, regarding his work. Participants are welcome to provide rich and diverse readings on a number of subjects: to share their insights with Eisenman and with each other.

IE MASTER IN WORKS SPACE DESIGN INTRODUCES: The Invisible Workplace / Design for how we work (and think)
Working in the Silicon Valley for over twenty years, O+A has experienced many different philosophies in the workplace. In the past, Studio O+A has designed both the Facebook and Microsoft offices, and Primo and Verda were named Contract Magazine’s 2011 Designers of the Year. This course will explore how they have engaged clientele and environments to create spaces that support the way we work today given the changes in technology and the challenge of work life balance.
Architect Preston Scott Cohen, Professor and Chair of Architecture at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design, speaks about projects in Asia and his design for the Tel Aviv Museum of Art’s celebrated Lightfall with architect, educator and National Academician Stan Allen. Journey through a three-dimensional landscape of striking architecture in this career-spanning exhibition of Moshe Safdie’s work. Global Citizen: The Architecture of Moshe Safdie surveys the renowned architect’s career from his formative period in the 1960s and early 1970s to his recent projects around the world, exploring his aesthetic language of transcendent light, powerful geometry, and iconic forms.
Using sketches, models, photographs, and films of twenty-five projects, the exhibition portrays Safdie’s architecture not only as visual art but as a medium for advancing social, political, and cultural goals.
