The architectural firm PRODUCTORA, based in Mexico City, is presenting 9 unbuilt projects that have a clear relation to geometry and mathematical composition. Large-scale models, made in collaboration with students at Woodbury University are presented together with black and white CAD drawing that clarify the main conceptual aspect of the building.
The simple positioning of the framed drawings, renderings and wooden models on the exhibition floor, avoids all museographic rhetoric and presents the work as autonomous objects in space. The title ‘In Between Projects’ relates to the ongoing development of a common formal vocabulary that underlies the circumstantial aspects of each individual project. This exploration is presented through an image loop of preliminary study models of the projects presented. Ultimately, the exhibition underscores the studio’s belief that strong geometric compositions and clearly legible buildings allow architecture to maintain its value through unpredictable shifts in context and program over time.

Starting this week,The Princeton University School of Architecture will hold until May 14 a retrospective exhibition on the work of Andrés Jaque and his architectural practice Office for Poitical Innovation. It includes their production since 2000, including several projects we’ve published in the past like the Plasencia Clergy House, Sweet Parliament Home, Escaravox and the Never Never Land House.
In the last 10 years the Office for Political Innovation has explored the question: ‘What happens to architectural practices when common notions of the urban (as something confined in cities) are replaced by others in which the urban is contained in urban enactments (ordinary interactions in which politics are produced)?’

Next Month, the Mackintosh School of Architecture (The Glasgow School of Art) will host its first International Symposium for Social and Humanitarian Architecture, ‘Clean Conscience Dirty Hands’, in the new Reid Building by Steven Holl Architects. The symposium focuses on the limited resources intrinsic to the provision of social and humanitarian architecture and the impact of such scarcity on the ability of organisations to ‘harness’ the learning from each built project through documentation, discussion and dissemination. As such, it seeks to provide both a locus and a forum for like-minded organisations engaged in social and humanitarian building projects, in order to capture and disseminate good practice in both a UK-based and overseas context.
International and award-winning speakers representing a multitude of organisations, including MASS Design Group, TYIN Tegnestue, Architecture for Humanity, London Metropolitan University, Peter Rich Architects and Orkidstudio will gather to discuss a range of ideas relating to one of the three topics broadly covered by the symposium:

The ‘Chronomanifestes’ exhibition by Bernard Tschumi, first presented at Les Abattoirs in Toulouse, will be re-exhibited again in 2014 at the Turbulences – Frac Centre. The radical period of architecture (Superstudio, Archizoom in Italy, Archigram in the United Kingdom to take just two examples) indeed proves itself extraordinarily rich in concepts and critical manifestos that challenge the discipline of architecture to form hybrids with artistic production and to advocate a political position.
Through his critical perspective Tschumi links the radicalism of experiments in the 1960-70 period and architecture that questions its own limits within a wider cultural and political field. For this internationally renowned French architect, ‘without an event, activity or function it is not architecture (…).’
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Frac (Regional Funds for Contemporary Art), a carte blanche was awarded to one or several designers in 2013 to conceive exhibitions from their collection or invent ways of presenting them. These 23 invitations vouched for the determination of the Frac to demonstrate the extent to which the artist is at the heart of their activities, from the collection to the production of works, including exhibitions.
At Les Abattoirs, Frac Midi Pyrénées in Toulouse, a group exhibition called ‘Les Pléiades’ took place from 28th September 2013 to 5th January 2014 to unite in a single venue all the different cartes blanches, that were presented regionally.
For this event, the Frac Centre chose to call upon a figure prominent in its collection: Bernard Tschumi. For this exhibition Bernard Tschumi used, for each of the years concerned, one or several projects by artists or architects that at some point made a proclamation or manifesto, a vision of the city and of architecture.
A book accompanies the exhibition, written by Bernard Tschumi, narrating the adventure experienced by radical avant-gardists, deconstruction and the emergence of digital, in conjunction with key events each year on an international level.

As part of the CA Group’s lecture series, “Architour,” principal of Ensamble Studio, Antón García-Abril & Débora Mesa, will give a lecture at 15:30 on March 29th at Tongji Architectual Design (Group) Co.,Ltd.(TJAD) auditorium in Shanghai. For 2013 through 2015, “Architour” has as its theme “New Force of Architecture – Leading Young Architects”: each year, the CA Group will select nine young, global leaders in architecture (four from Asia and five from the West) to lecture on topics that cross typologies and disciplines, from architectural design, urban planning to interior design. Sou Fujimoto, Hirata Akihisa, Christian Kerez and Thomas Heatherwick were the series’ first speakers.
At the end of each year, an exhibition will be mounted; and at the end of the years, the contents of the lectures will be published as a book.

In a symposium to be held this week at the Manchester School of Architecture, Contextualism: Dead or Alive? will explore the importance of contextualism in contemporary architecture. Five key speakers will be featured, presenting papers discussing context both in its purest theoretical form and how it might be addressed in practice. From debating the significance of building traditions (Jonathan Foyle) to how Mecanoo, who recently completed the Library of Birmingham, have approached contextualism in the UK (Ernst ter Horst), the symposium will endeavor to uncover the ties between architecture and the wider urban realm.
In a symposium at the AIA New York Chapter, seismologists, earthquake engineers, seismic code experts, emergency response managers, and architects conversant in seismic design will assemble for a conversation on available technologies and testing capabilities that, surprisingly, are located in New York State. They will “clarify the evolving role of design professionals, the building industry, and municipal and federal agencies in safeguarding our local communities”, as well as “educate the audience about the earthquakes, subsurface conditions, and construction approaches.”
On view at La Galerie D’Architecture until April 9, Jarmund / Vigsnæs Architects, Constructing Views 2011-2014, will exhibit 16 projects completed by the Norwegian architects in the last three years.
From private houses to temporary installations, the exhibition focuses on completed buildings, presented as architectural constructions in themselves, juxtaposing different views and attitudes towards architecture.
The practice, founded in 1996 by Einar Jarmund and Håkon Vigsnæs, with Alessandra Kosberg joining as a partner in 2004, was the first Nordic office we featured in ArchDaily. The cycle began in January and had its formal opening on February 8 with Peter Cook and Gavin Robotham, who designed the building. Cities in Asia HKG-SHA-SIN is a four-week design and research studio organized by the University of Hong Kong Faculty of Architecture. Taught with daily learning activities by a diverse group of faculty members from the University of Hong Kong, and speakers from internationally renowned universities and independent research groups, this course offers participants a design studio experience within Asia’s most vibrant contexts.
This credit-bearing course will introduce participants to different architecture and building types that have emerged from the current state of rapid urbanization in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Singapore. These urban building types are unique in the way they resist and subvert, or become mutated or subsumed by the prevailing socio-political and economic conditions of the three cities. Participants will learn about new architectural and urban theories and analytical methods that will broaden their knowledge of architecture and the city. The course will expose students to the inter-disciplinary nature of the subject, promoting more diverse attitudes towards difference and change, and encouraging greater confidence in applying the use of such knowledge to design and the broader society.

Porto Poetic, an exhibition covering the career and work of notable portuguese architects, started March 6 and will keep on going until April 13. The exhibition, which includes the work of Pritzker Prize winners Álvaro Siza and Eduardo Souto de Moura, will show sketches, plans, models and photographs of their most important work.

Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres are for anyone affected by cancer. Built on the grounds of cancer hospitals, they are designed to be warm, welcoming places that provide practical, emotional, and social support. Conceived by the late Maggie Keswick Jencks, along with her husband Charles Jencks, as a direct response to her own experience with cancer, the first Maggie’s Centre in Edinburgh opened its doors to the public in 1996. Since then, Maggie’s has grown to 17 centers across the United Kingdom and beyond, with many more to follow.
This exhibition will focus in depth on five centers: Maggie’s Dundee, designed by Frank Gehry; Maggie’s Gartnavel, designed by Rem Koolhaas; Maggie’s Nottingham, designed by Piers Gough with interiors designed by Paul Smith; Maggie’s West London, designed by Richard Rogers; and Maggie’s Barts, designed by Steven Holl (not yet realized). In exploring the unique architectural elements of each center, from the undulating roofs of Gehry’s Dundee to Holl’s musically inspired space at the future Maggie’s Barts, the exhibition illustrates the importance of user-focused design in creating an environment of help and healing. By design, Maggie’s combines aspects of healthcare and treatment that are often separate in to a single hybrid building type; a space that is part-hospital, part-church, part-museum, and part-home.

Frank Lloyd Wright and the City: Density vs. Dispersal, Now on View at MoMA
Frank Lloyd Wright was deeply ambivalent about cities—“A parasite of the spirit is here, a whirling dervish in a whirling vortex,” he wrote of the growing American metropolis in his 1932 book The Disappearing City.
The new exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art in New York City, Frank Lloyd Wright and the City: Density vs. Dispersal, examines his divided opinions and radical new ideas for skyscrapers and for the urbanization of an American landscape titled “Broadacre City.” On view is the spectacular 12-foot-by-12-foot model of the project, which merges one of the earliest schemes for a highway flyover with an expansive, agrarian domain, as well as a selection of the major architect’s drawings, films, and large-scale architectural models. Wright’s fascinating vision is paired with his innovative structural experiments for building a vertical city. Projects, from the early San Francisco Call Building (1912) to Manhattan’s St. Mark’s-in-the-Bouwerie Towers (1927–31) to a controversial mile-high skyscraper, engage questions of urban density and seek to bring light and landscapes to tall buildings.
Frank Lloyd Wright and the City: Density vs. Dispersal celebrates the recent joint acquisition of Frank Lloyd Wright’s extensive archive by MoMA and Columbia University’s Avery Architectural and Fine Arts Library.
