The competition for the “Fritz-Höger-Preis 2017 für Backstein-Architektur” started on 30th January 2017. The internationally renowned prize for excellence in brick architecture will be awarded by the “Initiative Bauen mit Backstein” and will once again be supported by the BDA “Bund Deutscher Architekten” (German association of architects).
The German “Initiative Bauen mit Backstein” awards architects and planners who take advantage of the architectural potential offered by brick, the traditional building material, with the “Fritz-Höger-Preis 2017 für Backstein-Architektur."
Buildings, whose designs integrate economic, ecological and artistic aspects for their complete planning requirement and whose architecture uses the location and its portfolio in the right way is what we are looking for. The “Fritz-Höger-Preis 2017 für Backstein-Architektur” worth a total of 10,000 euros will be awarded in the following
categories:
- Detached/semi-detached houses | Einfamilienhaus/ Doppelhaushälfte
- Apartment blocks/multi-storey redidental buildings |
- Wohnungsbau/Geschosswohnungsbau
- Office and commercial buildings | Büro- und Gewerbebauten
- Public buildings, sport and leisure | Öffentliche Bauten, Freizeit und Sport
Additional awards will also be presented in the following areas:
- • Energy efficiency | Energieeffizienz
- • Renovation/Sustainability | Sanierung/Nachhaltigkeit
- • Young talent/Newcomers | Nachwuchs/Newcomer
Properties with a brick façade that were completed after 1st January 2012 can be submitted. Properties that have already been submitted for “Fritz-Höger-Preis 2014” can be submitted again as long as they were completed after 1st January 2012.
Architects and planners can submit their documents for participation online at www.backstein.com/architekturpreis or send them by post. International submissions are welcome. The closing date for entries is 15th May 2017. The award ceremony will be held in Berlin in the autumn of 2017.

The “Fritz-Höger-Preis für Backstein-Architektur“, awarded for the first time in 2008, is presented every three years and is now one of the major architecture prizes in Germany with more than 500 national and international entries being submitted most recently. The competition has been supported by the “Bund Deutscher Architekten” BDA in partnership since 2011.
