The workshop titled:

“What if? Space is not defined.” A space within a space
BY NOURAN ZAKARIA
Questioning existing realities by experimenting with immersing new narratives of architectural spaces within existing boundaries of permanent spaces.

LANGUAGE: English
DURATION: 10 Days

WHAT TO EXPECT?

"Challenging the notion of our realities by questioning the boundaries of space and the perception of permanence in architecture. The workshop aims to inspire stirring up visionary impulses, reflections and individual desires for statement architecture changing the way people perceive, use and experience defined spaces. It will accordingly investigate how to create new realms while preserving and accentuating the character of the original architectures and places. Reconciling and choreographing how through transformation, ephemeral approach and often contradictory characteristics can continuously recompose a permanent bounded perceived space.
The goal then is to create an immersive space by looking for fragments, spaces, materials, needs or atmospheres that can support new narratives within existing boundaries of permanent spaces that at once were defined and had its own narrative, but which progressively have become less relevant or even vacant.
These immersive spaces representing diverse voices of people to create a space of protection, connection, isolation, control, performance, etc narrating, through architecture, individual stories, a way of living, a specific need, a space for the mind, ..etc to provide a multisensorial spatial experience that blurs conventional defined boundaries and transcends the imagination.
Part of the workshop is then to experience the abandoned spaces as they are the bases of the narrative the students should construct inducing their own realities and definition of space within these existing realities. So, a series of excursions through Berlin will take place to understand the space and how the initial function appropriated it and accordingly get a feeling or idea of the new space, its form, materiality, and state, and accordingly build their narrative.
These narratives will be then represented through a series of illustrations visualizing the design experiments showing the two spatial experiences and the method an existing space has been reused.
To represent the atmosphere of the spaces, students are going to build a conceptual scaled model as an abstract representation of the two realities put together. It will also show how this immersive space can exist with its own boundary without necessarily being defined by the existing space it occupies.
The workshop is open to all students who would like to use their creative minds to envision a different way of experiencing spaces and redefining their own boundaries."
