Having lived in the house through his mid-20s to mid-30s, it had slowly become more of an adult home over the years. What our client valued about the home was that it felt homely and was not pretentious – it maintained a sense of warmth, which was something he wanted to preserve in the extension.

A dull, concrete box is transformed into an attractive, modern supermarket. a change of ownership of the local supermarket in the street johann-wilhelm-klein-straße in linz provided an opportunity to redesign the building. The appearance of the market was not only renovated, but also clearly revitalized and harmonized with the corporate design of SPAR, the new owner. we chose the translucent casing as a simple, economical and, not least of all, “honest” way of imbuing the given cement box with a certain charm and expressiveness. The facade, composed of building-high profile glass elements, stands on a robust teel console – which also serves as impact protection – on the three visible sides of the building. the original structure remains vaguely visible behind this.

A 16 m square-shaped house was spotted in a single store above the inclined topography. In such a way that it results in two equal additional useful spaces: under and over it, like a yard in the shadow and another one in the sun, places to stay outdoor either in a rainy or a sunny day. Due to the slope, from any of the three levels we can always reach the ground at the same level, even on the roof we can cross a bridge and find the ground level again.

The clients who were living in Dublin decided to invest in building a house in Donegal. At the time they were not sure if they were going to move permanently to the county, or use the house as holiday accommodation. The brideg asked for a design which was flexible enough to accommodate; (a) a house with 2/3 bedrooms, or (b) two holiday apartments contained under the one roof, or (c) a house with attached studio.

When Ponte de Lima Municipal Market was built in 1927 it was the cause of public discussions concerning the pros and cons of its location, although no negative remarks seem to have been made about its elegant design. 70 years later we can still see its somewhat domineering relationship, from the height of its granite base, with the city centre and the avenue of plane trees.

Something is born, something dies... but people remember a primitive place, evening fires, steel in the air, sleepers and rails, black coal and dark water everything flows, and the memory of that strange amalgam struggles to survive in the recollection of the landscape and men build once more, mad architects, homeless nomads, exciting places for the sedentary written on the ground distributing the discovered material uniformly across the new plaza recognising the reality of conditions that may affect their transformation and letting the definitive redistribution emerge on its own as the fruition of the process in a place wherein resides the memory of the steel alquemists, the boatbuilders, the land tillers, with all the components of that crucible amalgamated for the public steel and stone, wood and rich soil, all dead long ago, now revive, mixed together in small transitable spaces apt for discovery of frolic, intimate or collective in which one can just look or listen, or perhaps try to speak once more with an alternative topography a geography for pocketing the surrounding landscape and a flat estuary that vibrates with the mountains it envies.
