A Tale of Buckwheat, “Memil Danpyeon” - Buckwheat is one of the grains that receive scant mention in Korean literature, which predominantly centers on aristocrats. This is because its unsophisticated character was often associated with a rustic flavor. However, due to its robust vitality, the buckwheat stood out as a cherished staple, enabling commoners to endure harsh winter and hardship in the past.

The clients had renovated a house several years ago and used it as an office building for a design company. They recently purchased a multiplex housing unit next to it and decided to create housing and small-scale neighborhood living facilities for rent. Having already experienced remodeling before, they were fully aware of the advantages of remodeling and thus wanted to increase efficiency by remodeling the building again if possible. However, considering the recently tightened demolition standards followed by the waste of time and cost, insufficient floor-to-floor height for rent as a neighborhood living facility, and the requirement to demolish the exterior walls to secure minimum parking space, the clients decided that the cost and effort incurred by the remodeling would be greater than the efficiency it may bring. Therefore, we and the clients made a bold move and decided to construct a new building instead.

Designstudiominwoo* has created two spaces to feel differently under the concept of "TIMELESS MODERNITY," which does not change over time. The world entering through two roads from the entrance is the same, but it gives a different feeling. The first hall space, which entered through the forked road, reflected faintly with the light falling from the high ceiling, imagining fog in the pond. A quiet stonework is located on the pond, creating an atmosphere of space. Objects with different physical properties made of triangular horns above them become the point of space. The second room space of the forked road is reminiscent of the light from the wall shining through the trees, expressing the beauty of soft light. The space composition of Otsu-seiromushi is largely composed of an entrance, a hall, a room, and a kitchen, and each created a different space scene.

Making a flexible place for the public purpose: The National Assembly Communication Building to be built in the National Assembly of South Korea area, the cradle of Korean democracy had to be planned as an open place reflecting the pluralistic democratic ideology while embracing the order of the existing components. And, the function of the building to be used by user groups would require not only systematic security systems but also spatial flexibility and expandability. Thus, Haeahn Architecture aimed to build “a flexible building containing open places” where daily life of the public would naturally take place, in addition to the formal monumental nature of the National Assembly area. Implementing a green space open to a flexible area: The site for the project was a green space surrounded by lush trees, about 10~12 meters in height on average.

Among the new real estate consumption trends, there is the neologism called ‘Young-kkel Generation’ which means that young people borrow money from banks and their entire family members as much as possible desperately to buy their own house. ‘Yeong-kkel generation’ is an expression of anxiety created by the young generation’s fear that they cannot buy their own houses in the future due to a sharp rise in house prices. This situation is getting so serious.

The ancient brick from the Qing Dynasty of China is a building material widely used in many ways due t its unique vintage character. We thought there is significance in using this material as this building is located in an area that is densely populated by Chinese people in Korea. Though some films have exaggerated the atmosphere of this area for the sake of a cinematic setting, it’s true that it has a unique atmosphere that cannot be seen elsewhere, and most of the tenants are Chinese. Therefore we did not hesitate in selection the bricks that would be familiar to them as exterior materials.
