A completely ground-level, cozy house that would bring a sense of well-being and calmness to enjoy weekends: these were the owner's requests for the design of a 201m² house, located in Xangri-lá, a city near Porto Alegre, for the architecture firm Stemmer Rodrigues. In addition, the team had the challenge of executing the project in just six months and intervening as little as possible on the terrain while maintaining one hundred percent of the large trees already existing on the site.

What does a beach house needs other than a generous veranda, a pool, and a gourmet area that all connect to a spacious integrated living room? Those were the main guiding principles designing this home in the northern coastline of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, from these it was proposed the program and its goals. The street corner site allows for two strategies for the same program: turn the house inwards, open for a private courtyard with the pool or bring the pool to the front of the site and develop the spaces facing it and the street.

Sense is a neighborhood located in the seaside city Xangri-Lá, in the south of Brazil. The development hosts 144 sites for houses bordering a lake. The design of the facilities includes a social club with lounges, an outdoor pool over the lake, and a small spa complex. Other buildings such as an entrance gate, a covered tennis court, and a barbecue gazebo are also arranged over the development’s common areas. The design’s main concept is luxury and simplicity, focusing on each material's inherent elegance. The design aims to reference the Brazilian architecture essence, through concrete, wood, and glass, that materializes the buildings; as well as the integration between construction and nature.

The briefing is standard for a beach house: generous social area to entertain family and friends and an intimate area for resting. The living spaces on the ground floor areas as open as possible. On the second floor are the bedrooms and all private areas - a spa and the tv room. On the ground floor, the social spaces are articulated by smaller volumes that hold the complementary spaces (kitchen, toilet, warehouse, and service).

Its implantation in a plot with dimensions 12x30 meters was guided by the legal conditions and by the needs program. This program, which required an extensive occupation of the plot for the house to open to its interior. The house dialogues with contemporary living, where the simple and the connection with what is natural is necessary daily. Especially in a beach house, where being stripped and uncomplicated becomes a basic necessity.

In order to meet the owner's expectations, who like an open house without losing privacy, all of the faces of the social area were designed as a part of the external area. In addition, natural light and cross ventilation were used with the aim of avoiding the use of air conditioning. Energy saving was also optimized with the use of LED technology in all ambients. The concrete walls, beyond creating an inequivalent brute and rustic appearance, offer advantages regarding the temperature and low maintenance.
