Is architecture a part of the landscape or vice versa? How can design enhance the sense of Place? In order to consider the building in question, the foremost impression is that it contributes to the overall identity and character of the site. Contextual architecture seeks to create buildings that feel like a natural extension of their surroundings, enhancing the aesthetic and functional value of a place. It is an approach to design that considers the surrounding environment, culture, and historical context of a building's location. The goal is to create structures that harmonize with their surroundings and complement the existing landscape and built environment.

While we were attuned to building homes and weekend houses, designing a place that feels like a weekend house required us to rethink the very concept of a house. Set in a typical gated community with a dense urban fabric, House of Concrete Walls is a response to this rather unusual brief. Striving to constantly be in dialogue with the outside, the house creates an experience of living amidst the serenity of nature.

This is a farmhouse. It is a humble residence that has responded to the climate and site. It is a fun fact that the house is both an inward and outward-looking house at the same time. One of the USPs of the project would be that it connects well with the most playful element of nature – the sun through its dynamic perforated screens and courtyards that animate the spill-out spaces with playful shadows throughout the day. The site situates itself on the outskirts of Baroda near a village named Aampad.

The residence is in one of the central areas of Vadodara city. The site is surrounded by many adjacent urban dwellings. The design brief for the house had many memories attached from the client’s side. Now evolving over time, they wanted to experience contemporary modulations in the same space with minimum budget specifications. The house defines dialogue between existing structural grids and new different punctures infused for communication. The design shows a thoughtful approach to addressing challenges inside a built mass, creating opportunities for visually open spaces by adding colourful graphics. As part of climatic considerations, passive design strategies and planning principles have been incorporated.

AR13 is established with the moral of giving back to society through its architectural design. One of the representations is their architectural studio itself which is a convertible space to work, play and congregate in an organized urban patch. The principal architects of AR13 have their different areas of interest other than architecture and interior; considering the same the space is designed as an open studio with different possible natures. Located on an internal road of a finely defined urban grid of Vadodara, the architectural studio is built in an east-facing rectangular plot with an area of around 2600 sqft shares a common wall with open plots in the west and south direction while the north side abutted with a residential building.

Rooted in simplicity and minimalism, it stands there strikingly and completely in harmony with its surroundings to provide the user with a house that they can call their home. Day by day everyone’s house is becoming bigger and bigger. At such times, one has to think beyond usual when a client approaches with a requirement of a five-bedroom house on an extremely compact site of 1770 sq. ft. The site, upon excluding the mandatory setbacks, elicits just the bare minimum floor space for the house.

On entering, the studio greets with bold adaptive artworks on the entry gateway from clay tiles infused with stonework and colors.
Colors express celebrations of life. Located in a semi urban area of Vadodara, this plot space of 1600 square-feet-space has two sides open with one side adjoining to the neighbourhood. Using simpler geometric forms, robust massing has been evolved in subtle, striking the surfaces with detail patterns and textures. Interiors of the dwelling features use of light coral pink walls and a complimenting shade of yellow inspired by concept of surprising color graphics.

A house should reflect the taste and the personality of its owner as well as the ability of the architects to make the whole come together and form a space fit for its occupants and its context. And that’s the philosophy we followed while designing this residence. The house follows a subtle Indian and earthy aesthetic as per the client’s taste, and has been designed keeping in mind the climatic conditions of the place.
