The clients of the East-West House originated from China and the Netherlands. They have traveled all over the world, among other things, and lived in Asia for quite some time. Now back in The Netherlands, they have purchased a typical 1930s uninsulated brick corner house in The Hague. Their request was to create a sustainable, modern, attractive, and warm extension and renovation where both worlds, east and west, come together.

Villa K340 is located in Vroondaal, situated in Madestein, a beautiful natural and recreational area adjacent to the dunes and the beaches near The Hague in The Netherlands. Vroondaal has several designated "residential atmospheres" from a planning perspective. K340 is situated in the residential atmosphere called "De Hoogte," where modern villas are allowed to be built in a landscape of artificially constructed hills. The design of this villa aligns with this concept, featuring a split-level layout that moves with the contours of the hill. This creates a dynamic interplay between landscape design and architecture. The entrance is located lower down by the road, while the living room is positioned higher up on the hill.

This is a house extension and renovation project in Scheveningen, the old fishers' town of Den Hague. The original house was tiny at best. It’s the last of a short row of small workers' houses, in a side street to Scheveningen-center. The occupants loved the city and the surf but really needed some more space. The extension more than doubles the original house and is like a little gem hidden in the alleyway.

The area is bounded on three sides by important traffic arteries: the Turfmarkt, an important pedestrian precinct from Central Station to the center of The Hague, the Schedeldoekshaven, an important traffic connection for cars, busses and trams and the Lage Zand also a tramline. The basic principles of the building design are based on the plot settings of the early American skyscrapers. An important reference for the building was the early high-rise typology of the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th century in Chicago.

Wrapped around an internal courtyard of the Haagsche Bluf, the food court spreads across three adjoining buildings, connecting multiple floor levels and irregular structural grids. The new design simplifies the original chaotic ‘forest’ formed of existing columns, beams and staircases, turning the dark and low interior into an open public space heavily inspired by the tradition of the greatest European piazzas. For the basis of the concept Studio Modijefsky chose seven unique elements which can be found in all the typical urban squares: landmarks, striking paving, fountains, stairs, merchant stalls, playgrounds and statues. Each of those objects has been translated into a contemporary architectural component, forming a new design language which links together the spaces forming the venue.

KCAP has released images of their proposed HS Kwartier urban vision for The Hague in the Netherlands. As cities such as The Hague face the challenge of providing more inner-city housing, former industrial and port areas are increasingly being reimagined as attractive areas for living and working. KCAP’s HS Kwartier scheme, situated in the post-industrial Laakhavens region, seeks to “give an impulse to both the environment around Hollands Spoor station and the connections with the center of The Hague."

Designers Carvalho & Bernau bought from the municipality two old classrooms in a former school building. The renovated complex, with 11 apartments, consists on a hybrid combination of buildings from the beginning of the 20th century and from the 1980s. The municipality has carried out the renovation of the exterior themselves. The transformed dwelling, with high rooms that can be reached via a communal corridor, had to accommodate three bedrooms, living area and play space for Alba, who had just turned one year.

Dutch architectural practice UNStudio have created a new urban vision for the City of the Future, a Central Innovation District (CID) test site in The Hague. Dubbed the "Socio-Technical City", the design covers a 1 square km area in the center of the city. The proposal aims to transform the site into a green, self-sufficient district of housing, offices, urban mobility and public spaces over the existing train track infrastructure.

To read the stories behind other celebrated architecture projects, visit our AD Classics section.

Designed shortly before Zaha Hadid left the Office of Metropolitan Architecture (OMA)—led by Rem Koolhaas—to found her practice, Zaha Hadid Architects, the proposed extension for the Dutch Parliament firmly rejects the notion that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Rather than mimic the style of the existing historic buildings, OMA elected to pay tribute to the complex’s accretive construction by inserting a collection of visibly postmodern, geometric elements. These new buildings, unapologetic products of the late 1970s, would have served as unmistakable indicators of the passage of time, creating a graphic reminder of the Parliament’s long history.
