In 2017, a national survey in favor of marriage equality lead to the Australian parliament passing the bill to legalize same-sex marriage, a milestone in the struggle for equality for the LGBTQI+ community. The same year, the Victorian Pride Centre (VPC), a not-for-profit organization, received funding from the Victorian Government for Australia’s first purpose-built LGBTQI+ center and subsequently held an open architectural competition for the design of the center in Fitzroy Street, St Kilda. In January 2018 Brearley Architects & Urbanists (BAU) and Grant Amon Architects (GAA) were selected winners of the design competition.

An open minded client approached us with the opportunity to renew an awkward, narrow & underutilised infill site in inner Melbourne. Located on a strip zoned as business opposite a freeway at one end and in-tact lower rise residential fabric at the other, the brief called for an adaptable building model housing domestic accommodation along with the municipal requirement for business on one or more levels. The clients - a property industry professional and interior designer who live here with their 2 adult children & partners and a young daughter - saw it as an opportunity to embrace inner city living &challenge the traditional ‘quarter acre block’ housing typology in Australia that they had come from to provide a flexible platform to house a multi-generational household and commercial use on the ground level.

The project reflects a joyful take on the classic “box on the back” renovation. Its design embraces a nimble and sensitive response to a heritage context, while also meeting the specific needs of the client in creating a space that is a pleasure to live in. Transforming a previously dark and minimally ventilated house, the design breaks open the segregated floorplan (typical of this typology), to provide an engaging sequence of interlinked, yet not quite open-plan spaces, each with its own character to create a quiet haven - a suburban sanctuary.

Landmark St Kilda pub The Village Belle Hotel has been reborn through a reimagined design by Technē Architecture + Interior Design which opens the historic hotel up to Barkly Street and, just across the road, to the new pedestrian zone on Acland Street. The Technē design contrasts a contemporary beer garden, enclosed in fully operable glazing and robust steel framing, with a restoration of the original Victorian elements of the hotel. A drive-in bottle shop at the rear, on Smith Street, has been removed to make way for 12 boutique apartments.

It has inspired a dedicated fan web-site, generations of fancy-dress costumes and countless YouTube tribute videos, and now a building. That’s right, Luna, Elenberg Fraser’s new four storey residential project on Barkly Street, St Kilda, is based on Princess Leia’s infamous ‘dancing girl’ gold bikini, featured in Star Wars, Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. While Luna’s curvaceous form echoes thedraping lines of Leia’s usual white robes, the shimmering gold glass and metal mesh materials are matched perfectly with the colours and textures of the gold brassiere.

Harper Lane is an infill residential development built on a vacant ‘L’ shaped site – ‘leftover’ land wrapping around a 1930s telephone exchange. The client was a joint venture partnership between Neometro Projects and Icon Developments. Their brief was for a commercially viable residential development, working with an economical construction budget. Emphasis was also placed on achieving a high quality of amenity for the occupiers and responding to the concerns of the adjoining residential neighbourhood. The project provides 65 residential apartments and 1 commercial tenancy in 2 buildings, varying in height from 3 to 6 storeys. The site has 3m fall from the northern boundary towards Inkerman Street, allowing the lower levels to be ‘cut in’, with a café, a relocated substation and the upper basement car park on grade at the Inkerman St frontage while first floor apartments access the garden level at the rear.
