Located in a lot just outside the historic center of Reggio Emilia, the building, dating back to the '50s, appeared rather out of place compared to the neighborhood in which it was located. Built in masonry with load-bearing walls, it was easily recognizable by its roof, whose slope was rather unusual for the region, being of a very pronounced angle.

The Reggio Emilia Approach was created in the post-WWII period at the initiative of widowed mothers and under the coordination of journalist and educator Loris Malaguzzi. In a time of postwar urban reconstruction, the group's primary concern was the formation of new schools, where they wanted to create a peaceful, welcoming, and cheerful environment, with a domestic atmosphere where children could stay while their mothers worked. Understanding the children's interests and providing a suitable environment for exploration and experimentation is one of the focal points of this pedagogy. The creation of a safe and stimulating environment is so fundamental that, in much literature, it appears as a third teacher.

Architecture and Plan. The new dance school is designed to replace the old building damaged by the earthquake. The building adopts a rectangular plan and is equipped with a fir wood structure and wood veneer. The use of natural materials is conducive to reducing the damage to the environment and protecting the fragile ecosystem after the earthquake.

In this case, the rich industrial history of the plant and the area is deemed essential for its refurbishment; its recovery depends on understanding its significance.

In the countryside between Parma and Reggio Emilia there are several ancient farms, now abandoned or in ruins. All of them have the same features, so that it is possible to recognize a building type: a compact block on three levels hosting the farmer’s residence, completed by a stretched volume hosting the cattle at the ground floor and the hay at the first floor. The cattleshed has three naves divided by brick columns supporting a vaulted brick ceiling, the barn consists in a big hall opened to the South, with pillars supporting oak trusses and a brick roof; both they are screened from the sun by a deep and high portico with brick paving.
