The clients are staunch locals, having spent most of their life in a modest cottage on the same road. They have owned the site for twenty years; planting and tending to the now mature grapes on the terraces above the site. They sought a permanent home here, a home for a lifestyle of mature years in the country, making wine, and tinkering with old cars.

The client’s brief was straightforward in terms of accommodation and revolved around the need to have a large open entertaining area associated with outdoor spaces (including a lap pool) with separate areas for the master suit and guests bedrooms. Although it this is a family home, long term the house could become a “boutique hotel” – the design needed to take this into account. The house had to relate to the spectacular landscape with easy access to surrounding patios and visual connection to the mountains and lake. The form was to be timeless and reflect the qualities of the regional architecture.

The mountain retreat is a small structure set within a high country station occupying 1,300 hectares on the south facing shores of Lake Wakatipu, Central Otago. This region of New Zealand is also known as the Southern Lakes. It is an alpine environment formed by heavily glaciated schist mountainscapes and vegetated below the snow line with beech forest. Early European occupation of the region began in 1840 with explorers seeking to extend pastoral activities established in the gentler environments to the north and east of the Southern Alps. This occupation was intensified by the discovery of the Central Otago goldfields in the early 1860's. Both forms of occupation constructed structures for shelter and utility with the stackable weathered schist readily available around the rivers and glaciated mountain slopes.
