The house is conditioned by the size of the allotment, but motivated by an existing slope, useful even in the elimination of an uninteresting and inconvenient environment, implanted at a higher level. The strategy involves confronting and reconciling artificial and natural data, believing in the affirmation and configuration of architecture through a regulating and distributing patio for the program. A rationalistic geometry and volumetry highlights natural and environmental values that are favourable to the domestic space. Apparently hostile, the topography is the raw material of the idea.

The project of a house in Oeiras, on a hillside overlooking the Tagus River estuary, in a territory with no memory, places us in a location where everything is new, yet anonymous. In an urban fabric where identity remains elusive. For this non-place, we designed not from delicateness, but from the intensification of gesture, from an idea with enough expression to establish a new time.

The house is built as part of a detached housing masterplan with set parameters for maximum built area, number of storeys and offset distances to the boundary. The plot presented a difficult shape and a pronounced slope with the additional challenge of the larger garden area and the nicer views facing towards North. An existing mature pine tree next to the road marks the plot.

The project is located between in an urban area with a residential neighbourhood mainly with social housing for low income families uphill and an area with various public buildings at the lower part of the valley. The elderly day centre is in between these rather different social, programmatic and physical realities, thus celebrating both its private and public character. The building presents itself as a counterpoint to the architectural character of the existing housing neighbourhood and therefore it tries to establish s strong sense of architectural identity for the existing communities, through its particular coloured and textured materials. The 60 dwellings are set out in two rows facing east-west on four interconnected floors.
