In the center of Nantes, the transformation of the former army barracks known as the Caserne Mellinet reflects contemporary urban challenges. Situated at the entrance of this neighborhood composed of six hamlets, the flats completed by Ramdam and Palast are part of the Chapus hamlet. This hamlet is the transitional urban feature linking the Saint-Donatien neighborhood and the heart of the barracks complex. Whilst respecting the intention of urban planners to create a coherent identity between the two areas, the project is first and foremost part of a powerful construction ambition of a wooden structure and mineral façades composed of plastered hempcrete.

In a world facing ecological exhaustion and spatial saturation, the act of building has come to represent both creation and consumption. For decades, architectural progress was measured by the new: new materials, new technologies, new monuments of ambition. Yet today, the discipline is increasingly shaped by another form of intelligence, one that values what already exists. Architects are learning that doing less can mean designing more, and this shift marks the emergence of what might be called an architecture of restraint: a practice defined by care, maintenance, and the deliberate choice not to build.

A New Urban Landmark — Renowned for its quality of life, Nantes stands out for its attractiveness and strikingly consistent growth. As the leading metropolis in Western France, the city is gradually reshaping its contours to meet the needs and aspirations of the times. Located in the immediate vicinity of the new Nantes train station, the Multimodal Hub and its offices are part of the dynamic metamorphosis of the district. This new architectural complex symbolizes the link between the historic districts to the north and the new Euronantes district to the south, as part of the major urban renewal project being carried out throughout the city.

The design of the extension to the university campus proposes an "articulation" following a simple, clear geometry, linking the various fragmented entities. This articulation clings to the existing buildings and connects the two existing and preserved buildings, stretching out from the entrance forecourt/hall. Its layout and geometry make it easy to structure the boundaries between the "urban" front and the "landscaped" rear. In keeping with this idea, it is the whole of the building that naturally shapes the exterior spaces.

The industrial city, the child of railways and automobiles, has itself given rise to a new urban form: the dense suburb. Predominantly residential, it contains detached, semi-detached, and row houses, sometimes even small, collective clusters of housing along its main roadways and intersections. For the sake of comfort, major roadways avoid cutting through such dense suburbs. Its proximity to a large city allows for other forms of mobility, whether individual (soft) or collective (public). Its density entails a maximal use of public facilities and the presence of neighborhood shops.

Featuring a roller skating rink, this temporary structure has been adapted to the irregularities of the ground and plays with its natural slope, giving the square a renewed sense of centrality, and opening it up to hours of fancy-free skating. Measuring 38m in diameter, the main structure is made of prefabricated white concrete, while the rink track is poured-in-place white concrete.

Located in the “Ile de Nantes” a site undergoing industrial transformation, the Alstom Warehouses requalification project marks a new step towards the objective of urban rehabilitation. It goes beyond – it is about city-making, city-making together on the old Alstom warehouses site so that a new dynamic arises at the crossroads of culture, technology, and economy.

CONTEXT Indulging in the Sunday pleasure of idleness, a couple observes the effervescence of the Parvis des Nefs. The big elephant leaves the Galerie des Machines. Its gears animate the imposing pachyderm and fascinate young and old. The children are playing. The teens congregate around the benches, and further on, a street fitness session brings together around fifty people.

On each project, we work specifically on the context. We are particularly interested in the close, distant, historical and sociological environment of the project. These data "feed" the design and come together to form an architecture. As the contexts in which we evolve are rarely homogeneous, our writing tends to be hybrid. The ZAC Erdre-Porterie is located near the limit of Nantes, close to singular natural landscapes. Important wooded areas are present: conserving the site's qualities is one of the challenges of this operation. Block BN4 is located between a wooded pedestrian path to the north and the courtyard of the new college to the south, which has preserved many trees.

On the Island of Nantes, among the Loire, the high school college mounted on stilt let breath the ground below, floodable and polluted.
