Situation. Project Beaumarchais takes place in a little alley, calm and vegetal, sheltered from noisy neighbors. The former commercial unit has to be transformed into a loft. The existing space is defined by its structure, metallic ceiling, beams, cinder blocks on the walls, its 3.85m under the ceiling, and by its depth, with only one facade towards the exterior to bring light in.

Keeping Promises
Our role consisted in the development of the project following the meetings (Design Workshops) with the inhabitants which were held once every two weeks over 5 months. Increasing the pace was necessary to give concrete answers to the expectations. Often avant-garde, the inhabitants were not lacking in imagination.

Apart from the asbestos treatment, the project provides for improved thermal performances and summer comfort, as well as the provision of access for the disabled. The building dates back to the 1960s: two upper levels over a ground floor, 64 metres long and 18 metres wide. The building has simple proportions and uses a concrete post and beam structural grid and hollow block floor slabs. The façades are dictated by the grid. For reasons of thermal insulation and deadlines (occupied site), the constructive choice of new, high performance façades was guided towards the use of site-assembled prefabricated wooden panels.
