Porcelain Studios Plugin Revival is the latest effort by People's Architecture Office to transform Jingdezhen's Imperial Kiln Historic District through the strategic insertion of prefabricated structures into existing historic buildings. Using their Plugin Architecture approach, PAO reactivates disused porcelain studios as living and working spaces that address contemporary needs while preserving the character of the original fabric. In contrast to an adjacent phase centered on civic-scale landmarks, this chapter turns inward, engaging the finer grain of historic courtyards and timber-framed workshops that once formed the everyday infrastructure of porcelain production.

An intriguing question. What could a utility building in a green park look like?. In the noisy summer of 2019 with cicadas chirping, I was asked this intriguing question. The inquisitor was Mr. Liu Zili, Chairman of Taowenlv, owner of the Jingdezhen Ceramic Art Ave Taoxichuan. Since 2012, he invited Professor Zhang Jie's team from Tsinghua University to lead the preservation and renovation planning. Once the state-owned Cosmos Ceramics Factory and Ceramic Machinery Factory, Taoxichuan has since transformed into a national cultural industry and innovative entrepreneurship model zone, a nighttime tourist destination, and a street packed with intangible cultural heritage. It serves as a stage for many artists and creators who have migrated to Jingdezhen.

The regeneration of an old porcelain factory property in the heart of Jingdezhen's Imperial Kiln Historic District is guided by what PAO calls a Plugin Architecture approach to historic preservation and urban regeneration. This method involves placing architectural insertions within and adjacent to existing buildings to revitalize the site while incorporating and respecting its historical elements. Jingdezhen, known as China's "Porcelain Capital," has a history of over 1,000 years in ancient porcelain production.

Zijing International Conference Camp is located in the mountains and ravines on the west side of Jingdezhen, Jiangxi. The site was originally a primitive and natural mountain valley with dense forests. Then it became a large narrow, extended field created by people cutting down mountains and filling ravines. We are thinking about can this project be an opportunity for us to try a new attitude and method to re-establish a harmonious and friendly relationship between the natural environment and artificial creations.
