The Villa 68 is located in a new urban area in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. It originated from the needs of a young family wishing to settle in the city while ensuring privacy, convenience, and an open living environment. The 500m² plot of land is situated at a road intersection, surrounded by planned large apartment buildings and public amenities. Although access to the house is convenient from multiple directions, creating privacy, avoiding noise pollution, and personalizing the interior presents a significant challenge.

The homeowner is a young man, but has a great love for old Vespas. He and his friends often travel on old Vespas throughout the provinces and cities of Vietnam. But then the time came for him to build a house and get married. He confided to the architect that he probably won't travel much anymore, and he will spend more time in the house. He also wants to build a house not only for him and his wife to live in, but also for his parents, grandmother, and younger sister to live with. The idea started from the homeowner's bedroom.

The idea of a home in a large rectangular room isn't appealing to us. The design evokes the iconic features of the familiar rooftop, veranda, screen, and garden, drawing inspiration from the existential era of architecture. A narrow walk from the front yard leads to the main door of the home, discreetly located behind the screen. Ascending the stairs, the living space is spacious, opening out to the backyard and the sky above.

This project entailed the comprehensive renovation and reconfiguration of both the inside and exterior of a residence constructed in the 2000s, tailored to accommodate the preferences, comfort, and character of a family that values traditional painting and artisanal lacquerware. The house's antiquity and several modifications, together with changes in ownership, rendered the creation of a new functional space within the existing structure a formidable challenge, despite its modest size. The refurbished residence necessitated six bedrooms, an expansive kitchen, and a primary living space for familial engagement and leisure.

Though surrounded by urban streets, S House feels closer to an eco-lodge than a city dwelling: a personal rural refuge with gentle touches of modernity.

Urban Sparkle transforms a restaurant site in Ho Chi Minh City into a luminous urban beacon through an origami-inspired steel roof that captures and refracts light throughout the day. The project explores spatial organization as a way to nurture family connection and faith within everyday life. The house is situated on a 4 × 20 meter plot that gradually narrows toward the rear, presenting familiar constraints of Vietnam's tube houses: a deep, elongated layout with limited access to natural light and ventilation. The building has only two open sides: an east-facing frontage that receives morning sunlight and a side façade bordering a narrow alley, offering an opportunity to introduce additional daylight into the interior.

In Vietnam, the tube house has almost become a vernacular form in densely populated cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. This typology originated from ancient façade taxes and as a strategic response to urban land scarcity and optimization of street frontage for commerce. Their traditional structure typically relies on the front façade for daylight and ventilation. People living there often face the challenge of designing in a space defined by the deep plots, limited street frontage, and close neighboring buildings, restricting natural light and airflow. To counter this fundamental lack of perimeter exposure, Vietnamese architects usually employ several strategies oriented towards internal environmental manipulation. This curated collection explores tube houses under 100 m2, where their small size increased the need for absolute spatial economy and the verticalization of function, which directly influenced design decisions across all projects.
