Situated in a residential condominium in Guarujá, a city about an hour and a half from São Paulo, this summer retreat takes advantage of the main view to create solutions that prioritize privacy and enjoyment of the living and leisure spaces. This beach house was commissioned by a long-standing client of the office, a couple who spends their vacations on the coast with their family and friends. During our first visit to the site, we understood that we should explore the back of the plot, which offers a view of the sea and where the access to the beach is located. On the other side, the front, accessed through an internal street of the condominium with constant traffic, needed to be more closed-off, while the side facades, in close proximity to neighboring properties, required visual protection. From this analysis, the image of a long, slender volume perpendicular to the access road, supported by slender eaves, emerged on the small plot corresponding to the buildable perimeter. Maintaining the horizontality of the proportion from the exterior and consequently reducing the overall height of the building, we worked with the idea of a half-level. This solution breaks the rigidity of the interior space and allows for different ceiling heights throughout the program.

The position of this house has been meticulously planned not to disturb the surrounding nature, and to respect the strict construction footprint. The site with steep slopes amidst a tropical forest, posed a challenge during the design and construction processes. Access points, views and feasibility had to be carefully balanced.

Summer house of 700 m², located in Guarujá, on Iporanga beach. The family's wish – a young couple and a young son – was for a “hippie chic” style residence, modern, with natural finishes, and high-end designer furniture, but without neglecting the laidback concept. To this end, it was necessary to carry out a complete layout remodel, as well as an expansion of the built area. As it is located in an environmental preservation territory, the team faced some challenges during the renovation such as condominium and public sector approvals, as well as restrictions to build beyond what was already established and built as a conventional concrete structure. Therefore, interferences were encountered during the demolition phase, and the project was adjusted as needed throughout the renovation.

Casa Azul is a case study on how to build amidst lush and protected nature, without damaging it. The land is located in Serra do Guararu, a coastal region of the Atlantic Forest in the state of São Paulo, just 500 meters away from Iporanga Beach. As it is an environmental protection area, the architecture had to work within strict parameters to fully preserve the existing landscape.

The house is be located in Iporanga, a condominium for beach houses on Guarujá, São Paulo’s coast city, approximately 120km east from the capital. This condo is inside a very well preserved and protected area of the original Atlantic Rainforest. To preserve the exuberance of this native forest the law permitted to occupy only 30% of the footprint of the ground plot surface. The challenge was to accommodate a large program that included five en-suite bedrooms, which demanded not less than 450m2 to be build. To achieve this, it was necessary to split the program in three levels.

The residence is located on the south coast of the State of São Paulo on a plot close to the sand strip of the beach. The house is implanted in the Atlantic Forest to obtain the combination of the ocean view and the native vegetation view. Composed of two distinct blocks of stone and concrete coupled to the main volume delimiting functions, the project prioritized the integration of social spaces and the privacy of intimate rest.

As we began this beach house project located on the coast of São Paulo, we came across very clear conditions: accentuated downhill terrain as well as immersed in the Atlantic forest, legal restrictions for the occupation of the lot, topography and natural vegetation modified, besides the proximity with the main roads. The starting point for our first design was to ideate a flat, sunny, open area with privacy on the terrace and swimming pool; that would fully integrate the area of leisure and socialization.

The project is located on the paulista shore in the region of the Rain Forest and the land has a mountainous topography with dense vegetation. The introduction of this house to this landscape has the objective of optimizing the connection between architecture and nature, privileging the view looking out to the ocean and the incidence of sunlight in the internal spaces. Furthermore, the positioning of the house on the site obeyed the previously-open area in the vegetation.

This condo is inside a very well preserved and protected area of the original Atlantic Rainforest. The exuberance of this native forest has taken the client to demand a house that occupied the minimum as possible of the ground (lot) surface. But at the same time he wanted it to be large and comfortable, and asked for 5 suites, one for the couple, one for each of his 3 suns and one for guests, which demanded not less the 400m2 to be built.
