It is 1.5 storey with a mezzanine and only 26m2 footprint. A double-height void and full-height column connect the mezzanine and ground floor. This is Baracco+Wright's second masonry building, preferring to work with lightweight materials and suspended floors.

Acknowledging the adjacent buildings at the rear and the original structure retained at the front, the lower level of the new addition is constructed of traditional red brick.

The Merri Creek House is a renovation and extension project to an existing heritage weatherboard cottage in the suburb of North Fitzroy. The project re-imagines the typical house with backyard typology and is designed around a series of landscaped courtyard gardens. Conceptually, the ‘backyard’ has been dissolved and dispersed throughout the plan, creating an arrangement of gardens that each offer and enable a variety of uses and functions throughout the day.

The initial design challenge was convincing council that the design would have very little impact on the streetscape in particular the inclusion of a roof deck directly behind the heritage parapet. Council was reluctant to allow any change to the roofline to the original front two rooms of the house. After some time preparing 3D models and negotiating with council they thankfully came on board with the idea and the proof is that people walking past are none the wiser to there being any change to the original house.
