Paying homage to Collingwood's industrial past, House of Fortune by Dean Dyson Architects, restores heritage while embracing innovation and social connection. Stepping into Dean Dyson's studio, the clients described wistful reminiscing of Collingwood's industrial past and shared childhood memories of neighbourly engagement and social connection. These stories inspired Dyson, as lead architect, to weave cherished memories into the very soul of the home. Stepping beyond functionality, the design incorporated "nostalgic feelings" through layout and material choices. The brief to Dean Dyson Architects centred upon values of family connection and adaptation.

A breathing space - Seeing the potential of an urban industrial site in Collingwood and working alongside a progressive client, Carr has designed a project that pushes in a new direction of sustainability, longevity, and innovation in commercial architecture and interiors. Set within the ever-evolving pocket of Collingwood, 116 Rokeby by Carr takes cues from the fragmented industrial materiality of Collingwood with a rigorous approach to sustainability. The form is robust and tactile, expressing strong architectural repetition on the façade while bringing a holistic, inside-out approach.

A peaceful sanctuary set against the suburb’s industrial backdrop, this six-story building is far from a typical office space. The long and linear site presented an opportunity to open the building from the middle via the laneway rather than a prominent street address - a simple design move that resolved circulation issues, enhanced solar access and natural ventilation, and improved building connectivity. A small cafe and communal garden courtyard greet users on arrival as well as an outdoor staircase promoting active movement throughout the building.

Early site inspections at the c.1887 former Foy and Gibson historic brick warehouse complex revealed an apartment fit out with a series of unfortunate conversions. Perhaps described best as a ‘fire-trap’, we began exploring conceptual possibilities relating to the tinderbox and its three core elements. Comprising flint, tinder, and firesteel, this common 18th century fire starting kit inspired a material narrative. Accent colors in red and yellow, light timbers with exposed joists and battens, exposed metalwork, and charred or blackened finishes formed the palette for the loft refurbishment.

There are few suburbs in Melbourne that have arguably as strong of a personality or local street culture as Collingwood, the inner north of Melbourne. In the past ten years we have seen a strong push towards increased density and desirability due to its proximity to the CBD, but more importantly because of the street, food and art culture. The gentrification of Collingwood has come at a cost, with many examples of middle-class values driving certain flavors and styles of development and architectural style.

Campbell Street is a study in pushing multi residential architecture and vertical living to the limits. The dwelling lot sizes are 4m in width and 9m in length, 36m2 in total per dwelling, or 72m2 total site area. A density of 140 dwellings per hectare. The average city lot size in 2016 in Melbourne was 400m2, more than 10 times the size of our site. There are two dwellings side by side, identical in dimension but not layout. Each house aspires to provide the traditional three-bedroom housing typology squeezed, stacked and blurred. Not only were we fascinated by working with such constraints, but we were intrigued by offering solutions and alternatives to city living that are outside the conventional market offerings.
