Barozzi Veiga Wins Competition to Design and Renovate the Jewish Museum of Belgium

Barozzi Veiga, in collaboration with Tab Architects and Barbara Van Der Wee Architects, has just won the competition for the renovation of the Jewish Museum of Belgium. Discrete yet present and integrated into the urban fabric, as the jury stated, the proposal was selected from five shortlisted established and young architectural practices.

More than of the garages, the project proposes finally flexible spaces. Simple spaces to store cars but also spaces of lives, generous external spaces. The building results in a single material (red brick). A volume which includes as well as possible with the existing building.

The Bronks Youth Theatre / MDMA

The Bronks Youth Theatre in Brussels consists of two halls, two holes in-between of which a central circulation shaft is situated. The staircase has the shape of a double helix with swing doors (coated with mirrors) placed on every intermediate landing. MDMA call it 'the septum'. It regulates the use of the halls in a myriad of ways. MDMA tried to make the halls, materialized in concrete, float and soar in light. Apart of the staircases, circulation 'around', consist for a large part out of ramps. They render a sense of detachment from the horizontal, the horizon.

This project is about the construction of 15 social housing units in Brussels. The apartments are organized in duplex and form a set of "small houses". The chromatic work is by artist Jean Glibert in the stairwell.

Meessen De Clercq Gallery / Vanden Eeckhoudt - Creyf Architectes

The project was to build a mansion into an art gallery with a housing for the gallery. Due to the existing strong image of the building, the architects were challenged to provide new spaces that contained the interest of the old spaces coupled with new modern gallery spaces. The design result is a mixture of existing staircase and new neon pink lights.

The project is a new housing complex of 34 high-standard apartments from 1 to 3 bedrooms. It is located in a valley floor between the so-called plateau Avijl and Kauwberg, two high-value ecological sites of Uccle (a Brussels' District). This is a very sensitive situation at the articulation of urban and rural spaces and the border of a protected natural site.
