This relaxed resort-style home and work environment, a short flight from Germany, blends into its surrounding bucolic landscape through its use of form and locally inspired materials. Designed by SAOTA, it reflects a contemporary take on Mallorca’s architecture. The client’s vision for Bora Headquarters was inspired by the airy light-filled spaces of SAOTA’s Cape Town projects that they had previously visited.

This two-story house plus basement has been built in an area of consolidated constructions The extreme proportion of the site together with the fact that the views are towards the north, have been the main conditions of the project. A 47 meters long dry stone wall is the backbone of the house.

Traditions in Mallorca continue to drift into making the island a tourist served region. Hotels, restaurants, beach houses and clubs keep opening providing a mirage of paradise to those in search for a quick and easy sun tan. Amidst these bustling tourist areas there are still areas where locals manage to live a life in where time has stopped, and alien tourist sun consumers seem far away. Being concious of the value of the land and the pleasures it provides, one way they manage to under grow the traditions is by spending their free time carrying out classical rabbit hunting by means of Ibizan hounds, (native to the Balearic islands).

Ca s’Ametller is a 19th-century house refurbishment where the space is designed after a need for flexibility of use. While most of the time it will be used as a holiday retreat for a couple, it can get to be a family reunion place as well a few times a year. This meant that the house and its space had to be fully enjoyable and adaptable to each case.

This year’s Venice Biennale will kick off on August 29th and run through November 25th and for the first time, the Institut Ramon Llull will be presenting an exhibition dedicated to Catalan and Balearic architecture entitled “Vogadors”, featuring nine projects from nine different architects that epitomize the contemporary and avant-garde works from the regions. The exhibition is inspired by the Mediterranean Sea, which is the main geographical feature of the regions, and by the words of Jorge Oteiza, “He who forges ahead creating something new does so like an oarsman, moving forward but back-paddling, looking behind him, towards the past, towards what exists, so as to be able to reinvent its underpinnings.”
