ArchDaily, Strelka Institute, and Strelka KB have selected a long list of 50 architectural projects from Armenia, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Russia, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan for the second edition of The ArchDaily & Strelka Award. The open call invited emerging architects to submit their built projects that emphasize sustainability, research-based and participatory design, and the innovative use of materials. Architects and architecture and design firms that started their practice no more than 10 years ago could apply with projects that were built in the past five years.

URAM Extreme Park / Legato Sports Architecture

URAM Extreme Park is the largest extreme park in Russia, built in 2020 by Legato Sports Architecture. The architects faced a difficult task — to build a park that: 1) combines all the sports facilities necessary to prepare extreme athletes for high-level competitions, such as Olympic Games, 2) has simple extreme zones where amateur athletes will be able to develop their riding skills, 3) fits into the context of the historical city center of Kazan, 4) will become an open and free public space for urban recreation.

LUCH 6 Office/ KOTRA architects

Our LUCH 6 project was carried out in 2021 for Glera Games, one of the game development companies in Belarus. We received a unique site at Luch Watch Plant in Minsk, so the project was named after it. The historical building had recently been reconstructed and a part of it was rented out to companies, following the concept of offices neighboring watches manufactory.

The Nikolsky Rows Public Space / KATARSIS ab

The Nikolsky Rows are an example of a gostiny dvor, a very distinctive Russian type of historic market complex. The building fell into disrepair and remained abandoned until a recent restoration. Today, the complex is occupied by a hotel. Until recently, the inner courtyard was taken up by a parking lot. The Nikolsky Rows remained excluded from the context of the city.

A small two-story mansion with the shaded terrace in Trubnikovsky lane. And the first fine dining restaurant of signature dishes by Arkadiy Novikov in partnership with chef Atrem Estafev. Embarking on the project, we were astonished at the uniqueness of the client's vision which was not made up of clichéd models of already existing restaurants.

Shelest Retreat / YoDezeen studio

Shelest project is located in the dense pine forest on the shores of the Kyiv Sea. The first task for the team was to slow down, walk around the surrounding countryside, get some fresh air and feel the atmosphere that the client, the local developer, was trying to create. He talked a lot about the environmental friendliness of everything that concerns and is associated with the country club. And he sought to complement the purity of nature with architecture that would organically flow into it.

The Richter project is a tactful restoration of a landmark building of the mid-19th century in order to adapt it to current commercial and public functions. The interiors of the Moscow mansion are built on the New+Old concept, where contemporary design objects are combined with the original heritage of the architect and conservator Fyodor Richter.

Basis studio has been working on the Pavshhinskaya Poyma embankment project for the past six years and is continually working on it. In the initial stage of the project, the studio held public hearings and worked actively with the residents of the area. Basis studio has received a lot of positive feedback from users of the public space thanks to civic engagement and the high quality of the implemented project. The architects managed to find common ground between residents and real estate developers and channel the situation in a positive direction.

Tymen Printing House Reconstruction / A61architects

The complex consists of three buildings, two of which are cultural heritage objects. Originally these buildings were built in the beginning of the XX century for a commercial purpose. After 1917 the buildings had been transformed into a printing house.

Voznesensky 5 / NOWADAYS office

The reconstruction of all three parts of the building, located in Voznesensky Lane, made it possible to adapt it for new functions — offices, a restaurant and retail. The degree of the intervention varied depending on the condition and historical value of each building. The building from the end of the 19th century, facing the side street, was restored. Through the use of two shades of plaster, the historical design of the facade was emphasized while the plinth was encased in granite. For the two-story building in the courtyard, a granite basement and granite slopes on the windows were added.

House in Artana / NS Studio

The project area is located in the village of Artana at the foot of the Caucasus mountains. This breathtaking view of the Caucasus became the landmark of a residential house. Our goal was to make the exterior as a part of the interior, so that the volume is towards the main entrance. There was arranged a verdant island in front of the building and a garage next to the house. On the rest of the Northern part of the territory there is vineyard.
