Winning the competition to design the National Museum of African American History and Culture has consolidated the practice’s US portfolio with arguably the nation’s most prestigious new building. Located on Constitution Avenue, adjacent to the National Museum of American History and the Washington Monument, the museum will house exhibit galleries, administrative spaces, theatre space and collections storage space for the NMAAHC. As lead designer for the Freelon Adjaye Bond/SmithGroup (FAB) team, David Adjaye’s approach has been to establish both a meaningful relationship to this unique site as well as a strong conceptual resonance with America’s deep and longstanding African heritage. The design rests on three cornerstones: the “corona” shape and form of the building; the extension of the building out into the landscape – the porch; and the bronze filigree envelope.

The Barclays Center is the home of the Brooklyn Nets and the site of more than 200 planned cultural and sporting events annually. It serves as the anchor of the Atlantic Yards development, which will function to relieve some of the pressure for new and affordable housing in the adjoining Brooklyn neighborhoods. The goals of the project were to create a venue that would be an economic and social catalyst for Brooklyn, while also blending into the neighborhood.

The 150,000 square foot Rutgers Business School is the gateway to Rutgers University’s Livingston Campus in Piscataway, New Jersey as envisioned by the campus master plan. The L-shaped form of the building spans 60 feet above Rockafeller Road becoming the physical gate through which most campus traffic passes. The building is part of a push, in keeping with the goals of the master plan towards a high density campus development complete with urban facilities, shared amenities, and a walkable campus. Similarly this building reflects the ongoing shift in higher education away from a focus on classroom-oriented organization and towards a focus on collaboration spaces. This shift is especially present in contemporary business where the cross collaboration of ideas, cultures, and concepts is necessary to create, evaluate, and market the next big idea.

Located at the center of the District of Columbia’s historic neighborhoods in Ward 8, Saint Elizabeths East is on its way to becoming a viable mixed-use, mixed-income community. Once the site of St. Elizabeths Hospital which provided mental health care to the US military dating back to the Civil War, the campus has been decommissioned and transferred from the federal government to the District of Columbia. Today the 180-acre site provides a setting for public, private, and institutional investment. With the planned consolidation of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and location of over 14,000 employees on the West Campus, the redevelopment of St Elizabeths East has become a critical project in realizing the District’s goals of cultivating an innovation-based economy.

Federal Center South Building 1202 is the “redevelopment” of an existing warehouse (Building 1202) located at Federal Center South in Seattle. The project is the result of the confluence of the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), which focused on improving our nation’s infrastructure and creating jobs, and the U.S. General Services Administration’s (GSA) Design Excellence program which focuses on selecting design teams that will push boundaries and generate innovation in design of our nation’s federal buildings. With aggressive mandates for reuse and energy-performance, Building 1202 transforms a 4.6 acre brownfield site into a highly flexible and sustainable 209,000 SF regional headquarters for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Northwest District.

The Center for Urban Waters was envisioned by the City of Tacoma to be a beacon on the water and an example of using building and site sustainable strategies for all future projects in the City. The 51,000 sf, three-story building functions as a shared research facility for City of Tacoma and University of Washington Tacoma to receive and analyze water samples from the waterways of Tacoma and surrounding areas. The building program is comprised of laboratories, offices, conference rooms, a lunch room, an exhibit center, a customer service center at the lobby entrance, and related building services including a mooring facility on the Thea Foss Waterway. The building is sited to optimize views across the waterway toward the city and views toward Mt. Rainier, to maximize public open space, and to provide access to the shoreline esplanade and to on-site parking.
