Nestled among the large-scale factory halls of Cleantech Park Arnhem, a mysterious presence sets itself apart from the heterogeneous post-industrial landscape: Showdepot DE.GROEN. This monolith of 18 x 18 x 18 metres is the new home for the art collection of collector-and-artist duo Marjolein de Groen and Peter Jordaan. After ten years, they are moving their growing collection of contemporary art from a listed building in Arnhem's city centre to a gleaming cube along a port basin of the Nederrijn.

The creation of Tripolis, a trio of idiosyncratic office buildings of 11,000, 8,000, and 6,000 square meters, was inextricably linked to Van Eyck's masterpiece, the Amsterdam Orphanage. Completed in 1960, the orphanage was one of the most important projects of the Structuralist movement, yet by 1986 it was already threatened with demolition. A successful international campaign was launched to save the orphanage, and the municipality of Amsterdam offered the adjacent land to the developer – on the condition that Aldo and Hannie van Eyck should design the new office complex. In 1994, their new design was completed, and thus Tripolis began its life as the symbolic savior of the orphanage.

Amsterdam’s Zuidas has something of a dual character. Colossal offices on the south side of the A10, and terraced houses on the north side. In the middle, there is a building from the 1970s, designed as an office, that is used as a school and which we are bringing back to its original function. However, it will become the ‘best-in-class office building’, because the city, neighborhood, location and building demand this. We felt duty-bound to do this.

Apollolaan 171 / OMA

The Apollolaan is a prominent green avenue in Amsterdam’s south district, within a unique neighborhood defined by Berlage’s architecture from the early twentieth century, and the iconic Hilton Hotel by the Dutch modernist H.A. Maaskant. In the late 1980s, the JP Morgan Bank organized a design competition for its new office located at a corner site along the Apollolaan. The monolithic design by Wim Quist with a largely opaque façade – suiting the security needs of the bank – was favored against other competition entries, including that of OMA. As the building transformed from the space for a single financial institution into rental offices in the subsequent years, the original design could no longer meet the new functional needs, or the anticipation of the tenants to work in a more open work environment connected with the neighborhood.

‘t Bosbad / GAAGA

'Het Bosbad' is located in park Bosrijk, a residential location where housing is designed as 'sculptures in a sculpture garden'. The building stands completely free in a clearing among the trees and is the latest in a series of special residential ensembles.

Palladio Residential Complex / V8 Architects

The Rotterdam Prinsenland neighborhood is known for its mix of Dutch urbanism concepts, which were developed during the period between the 1960s and 1990s. The neighborhood features block compositions of various volumes that incorporate both high and low building slabs, along with large public areas that remained undefined. Currently, the neighborhood is undergoing significant changes which include large-scale densification, sustainability renovations, and; the urban acupuncture of the Palladio apartment complex. V8 Architects has completed a new residential complex on the site of a vacant 1987 office building on Palladio Street. The complex reflects a human approach to creating affordable and rental apartments. Palladio comprises of 96 two- and three-room homes equipped with balconies or terraces, and floor areas ranging from 44 to 84 square meters.

The Doors Housing Complex / Space Encounters

In a landscape that used to be dominated by shipbuilding yards, dry docks, and mighty cranes, The Doors serves as a beacon for a new future. Amsterdam Buiksloterham is transforming into a vibrant part of the city where living, working, playfulness, and sculptural expression come together. The Doors is part of the dynamic masterplan Buiksloterham City-Plots, which was one of the first transformation plans in this area of Amsterdam. The plan consists of larger building block ensembles that together form a dense and mixed-use neighborhood. The urban integration of the building into the adjacent developments refines the architectural appearance and the spatiality of the design.

Valley Towers / MVRDV

Valley, the dramatic, geology-inspired, plant-covered high-rise designed by MVRDV for developer Edge, was officially opened in a ceremony on Friday. The 75,000-square-metre building, which was recently declared the world’s best new skyscraper by the Emporis Awards, stands out in Amsterdam’s Zuidas neighbourhood with its three towers of 67, 81, and 100 metres and its spectacular cantilevered apartments. The building distinguishes itself in several ways: firstly, it combines offices, shops, catering, cultural facilities, and apartments in one building; secondly, unlike the closed-off buildings elsewhere in the Zuidas, the green valley that winds between the towers on the fourth and fifth floors is accessible to everyone via two external stone staircases. The building’s extensive planting, designed by landscape architect Piet Oudolf, hosts approximately 13,500 young plants, shrubs, and trees. As these mature over the coming years, they will give Valley an increasingly green appearance, making the building a manifesto for a greener city.
