The new Allied Health Sciences building is located at the Higher Education Center (HEC) in National City, CA, a satellite campus to Southwestern College in Chula Vista, CA. The new 22,500 SF facility includes classrooms and labs in support of the college’s health sciences program, dedicating space specifically to areas of biology, chemistry, microbiology and anatomy, as well as laboratory training within the Medical Laboratory Technician program. Administration and faculty offices are also housed in the new facility, along with a regional Business Development Center focusing on small and emerging businesses in the area. Students in the healthcare program will also now benefit from a storefront community clinic located in the new building as a means to fulfill their required hours as healthcare assistants-in-training.

The Christ Hospital Joint and Spine Center, opened in September 2015, is a new model for integrated, patient-centered orthopedic care. Growing out of an SOM master plan for the hospital’s Cincinnati campus, the 381,000-square-foot, seven-story facility houses approximately 90 inpatient rooms and 12 surgical suites. The building is filled with natural light and flexible semi-public spaces offer a place of respite for caregivers and families. Patient rooms feature floor-to-ceiling windows and are organized and furnished to provide a soothing environment to patients and their families. Decentralized nursing desks, located next to patient rooms, place caregivers closer to those they serve and keep the patient floor quiet by dispersing activity.

Two new residential colleges are helping Rice University grow strategically while sustaining its signature campus culture. The project was designed in the collegiate quadrangle tradition. Shaded arcades carefully weave the spaces with existing tree-lined walks, providing an integral order to the original campus plan by Cram, Foodhue & Ferguson. The project includes seven buildings, including two Masters’ Houses, creating a careful composition and hierarchy of buildings and spaces.

The Brockman Hall for Physics gathers together a faculty of experimental physicists formerly scattered in as many as five separate buildings across the Rice University campus. It is now home to dozens of experimental, theoretical and applied physicists from Rice's departments of Physics and Astronomy and Electrical and Computer Engineering, and will support research in atomic, molecular and optical physics; biophysics; condensed matter physics; nanoengineering and photonics. A recipient of $11.1 million in federal stimulus funding from the National Institute of Standards and Technology, it was completed in a compressed design and construction schedule of just 33 months, an extremely short timeline for a facility of its kind.

Project Statement: The Brockman Hall for Physics is a 111,000 SF facility housing classrooms, laboratory space, lecture halls and administrative offices for the Physics Department as well as physicists from the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Rice University in Houston, Texas. Driven by Rice University’s belief that some of the most important moments on campus are moments of informal discussion and debate outside of the classroom, the design of the building and landscape seeks to provide a multitude of spaces for lively and inspiring conversation. Sheltered from the sun by the building overhead, a ground-floor courtyard features reflecting pool, raised Ipe terrace and enhanced plaza with movable furniture. As the design developed, the Office of James Burnett was also asked to redesign the “Courtyard of Science”, an interstitial space between the wings of Brown Hall to the south. A grove of Honey Mesquites organizes the space and intimate decomposed granite courtyards with movable furniture create a number of social spaces.

An extension of the 200-acre desert retreat of publisher, diplomat and philanthropist Walter Annenberg, the Sunnylands Center and Gardens is an interpretive center that celebrates the architectural and cultural legacy of the historic estate. Inspired by the Annenberg’s extensive collection of impressionist artwork, the landscape architect painted a living landscape that respects the character of the Sonoran Desert and demonstrates a new ecological aesthetic for landscapes in the arid southwest.

Conceived as a landmark destination for Rice University's campus, the Raymond and Susan Brochstein Pavilion demonstrates the ability of landscape architecture to foster social interaction and improve the human condition. A study in restraint and the purity of form, the garden at the Brochstein Pavilion creates a powerful spatial framework that has transformed an unstructured, underutilized quadrangle into the center of student activity on campus.
