A narrow and deep house - Around 2019, a couple who had purchased a lot in District Godeung, Seongnam, visited us to commission their first house design project. They had worked at the same workplace, and one of them was dreaming of a second life operating a cafe after resignation. Together, we visited the project site, a typical multi-unit housing site within the new town development district. Each of the lots here was just as wide and broad as it could barely accommodate a four-story building with a neighborhood facility and mixed multi-unit housing, and it seemed obvious that the 6m-wide road would soon become like a parking lot.

Movement-in-stillness - The name "Suum Urban" has been made by the client couple since their conception of this project. It meant the urban version of the cafe "Suum" operated by their parents in front of a water reserve just outside Cheonan. For the first client meeting, we visited the parents' cafe, "Suum," which is located in nature with a view of the surrounding mountains and water. Our project site, in contrast, is located in the middle of the city in front of a wide road with heavy traffic. There was little foot traffic, however, and small-scale houses and shops mixed, thus giving off a sense of being marginalized. We respected the client couple's courage to open a bakery cafe there.

Lower is more - Voree is located on one side of Baeksu Coastal Road in Yeonggwang-gun, where one can see the cliffs along the west coast. When we first visited this site for design, the gentle shallow slope under the road was covered with white snow, waiting for the barley seeding, which was supposed to be in the coming spring. The sea we saw standing at the coastal roadside was attractive quite differently than the commonly known west beaches were. When we visited the most lucrative cafe in the vicinity with the client, we saw the three-story building that was given quite a spectacular view of the sea. Our client felt so envious of its height because it was not until the building project had been permitted that a new regulation was established that the coastal roadside buildings should not obstruct the view to the sea; as a result, any new building since then cannot but be single-story. Unlike the client, we yelled for delight in our hearts as we gained the most effective justification to make a rather low building. Regardless but timely, we were already thinking at the site that the beautiful seascape should not be blocked by the new building.

Dongbaek Wooden House is located in a residential area developed under the concept of a townhouse in the early days of Korea called Hyangrin Hill in Yongin-si. The land is a condition with a somewhat stepped view and scent open to the south. Since it is a natural green area, despite the area of large land, the floor area of the house that can meet the needs of the owner is not sufficient. The Dongbaek Wooden House tried to fully utilize the structural and material properties of the heavy timber structure.
