The house is located on a ridge above the Lisbon estuary. It faces the Estrela Basilica on one side, and the river on the other. The house, with an extensive brief, requires the use of two circuits: one interior and the other exterior, alternating in order to facilitate the independence of the parents and their children’s lives. The house revives the form of a traditional street front house, in this case entirely in face concrete, both inside and outside. Thus, it opens up via the relationship between its constituent spaces.

The concept for this house emerges from a reflection on the identity of Lisbon architecture, a recurring type of 6-meter-wide and 15-meter-long deep house, ending in a small garden in the back. It is a 5-storey building with two radically different elevations: one “public” in white lioz limestone (the most used in Lisbon) and the one in the back, in glass, connected by an interior world in exposed concrete, punctuated by birch wood elements.

It is not often than we have the chance to project houses for both sides of one street. This is actually about planning a whole street, its atmosphere, its character, rhythm, texture, colour, etc.
It is a project to be worked on in two simultaneous scales, a city-scale and yet another one, smaller, domestic, individual.
This twofold condition is always present, even though public space is previously defined in sidewalk width, asphalt and parking spaces.

From the original building only the main façade, oriented southeast, and the chapel, both in ruins, were left. There was no trace from the carriage porch which completed the building on the southwestern end. However, all elements remaining from the old construction were examples of qualified architecture, in their proportion and elegance of the masonry.
