Vision - The House of Mdm SC showcases the perfect blend of functionality, sustainability, and modern design, fully encapsulating the concept of ‘new urban kampong’. Having grown up in the 1960s, the client had reminisced about Singapore’s old kampongs where sights of attap houses amidst luxuriant foliage were commonplace. This ‘house in nature’ is also in line with Singapore’s broad vision of ‘a city in nature and taps into the house’s location near the country’s central nature reserve. In addition, with only about 10% of Singapore’s residential property being landed, the client wanted a house that exploits all the potential of landed living that cannot be achieved with condominium living. The vision for this house is to typologically recast a socially and environmentally connected mode of living while creatively fulfilling the pragmatic needs of the client’s family and guests. The final product is a house that embraces land living on four stories, creating exceptional value on a small plot of land with challenging features.

The brief was to design spaces for intimate family moments, as well as host extended family gatherings on festive occasions. The spaces would maintain privacy, yet also be open to views, greenery, natural light, and ventilation. The house is located in central Singapore on an elevated site flanked on three sides by neighboring properties. The architects conceived the house design as a continuous landscape, where spaces interconnected, each with defining qualities. The architect's employed strategies including splitting the house into multiple levels, and the use of windows and color. These form the central design idea and characterize the house’s unique spatial experience.

The semi-detached house in Singapore is re-built for a multi-generation family who has stayed in the same street the past forty years. When the family has decided to rebuild their house to meet the changing needs of the extended household, they wanted their house to be introverted to safeguard their privacy in reaction to the towering neighbor next door where most of the rooms overlook their compound. The wanted a design that can accommodate the need for growth in the future.

The house along Cove Drive in Sentosa sits on a slightly tapered site that faced a man-made lake. Built for a small family that greatly cherish their privacy, the house turns it back on the street and the sides where the neighbours are in close proximity. Like a monolith resting over the gardens, the single, faceted volume house the main spaces with their primary view to the waterway. The main entrance brings one into the centre of the house with the living and dining space on the sides. The upper floors are split in the middle into two volumes that house the daughter and the parent’s bedrooms.
