The Wooloowin House sits on a very steep, west facing site with distant views towards the Samford Valley. The inherent tension between the distant mountain view and the ferocity of the summer sun from this direction led to a strategy of enabling a much more dynamic occupation of the site than is typical in these buildings.

K & T’s Place is the renovation of a traditional ‘Queenslander’ style home in a rapidly developing suburb of Brisbane. The house and garden occupy one of the last standing residential blocks in this area and the arrangement of the design works to defend the everyday workings of the family from new 16 storey neighbours to the west and predicted unit development to the south.

Brisbane 1, South Brisbane, was strongly influenced by its siting on a triangular block and its relationship to the nearby Brisbane River. The architecture was informed by the imagining of a single stone mass, eroded by water to create three distinctive towers. Corners are marked by these sculptured forms, with figures intensified at each point of the triangle. The ambition to resolve the building’s complex shape is rewarded by long-range views which impart a shifting perspective and reveal, at distance, a crystalline form.

Project background
Sunac Szeyup Palace is located on the banks of the Tanjiang River, Kaiping City. The project site is flat and open with excellent natural landscape conditions. As a noted hometown of overseas Chinese, Kaiping City, a part of Lingnan Area, frequently appears in the dream of those living overseas. As a result, the designers had to not only think about integrating natural and cultural landscape resources into the design thinking, but also about making connections to overseas Chinese.
