The Santa Monica College (SMC) Center for Media and Design (CMD) is a renovation and expansion of the school’s old Academy of Entertainment & Technology. The 3.5-acre project includes the construction of a 30,000-square-foot instructional wing and renovation of an existing 50,000-square-foot teaching facility; a new, three-story building for KCRW, a public radio station licensed to the school; and a new, seven-level parking structure. A courtyard with water features and a performance stage is showcased in the center of the complex. Located in ‘Silicon Beach’ – home to major media firms and tech startups – the CMD enables the school to unite all of its programs focused on media content development and design on one campus.

When the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), purchased property approximately one mile from its campus core, the university administration had a clear vision for its transformation. A former business park, the site needed to incorporate low- and high-density student and faculty housing, a convenience store, dining, and student life facilities into an integrated complex that connects students to each other and to campus.

The new Crest Apartments for the Skid Row Housing Trust transformed an existing open site in suburban Los Angeles into a 64-apartment complex for formerly homeless veterans. Located on a busy thoroughfare near two freeways, the project introduces a new density in the neighborhood with easy connections to public transportation and area resources. The client’s permanent supportive housing model includes individual efficiency apartments with on-site social services and community spaces. These combined programs effectively support the highly vulnerable residents in an effort to reduce chronic homelessness.

The plan of the University of California at San Diego's existing student center, the Price Center, was developed with an "introverted" configuration - a central courtyard bordered on three sides by all of the building's program elements facing inward - that established a powerful sense of place and a hub for dining, socializing, and events. When the university's growth necessitated an expansion of the Price Center, our solution was to create an "extroverted," highly permeable addition offering many points of entry and features such as plazas and monumental staircases that engage the building's surroundings and enrich the street experience.
