The clients—a professor and his wife—envisioned an experimental house that could serve as an example for how to achieve affordable, compact, energy-efficient, fossil-fuel-free living within aging urban neighborhoods. The new home sits on an existing 20’x34’ foundation. The concrete walls were repaired and reused, eliminating costly excavation and allowing the numerous mature trees on the site to remain undisturbed.

Deciding to move into the city, our client purchased an expansive lot with distant views of Lake Superior through the trees in the fall and winter.

Hyytinen Cabin in Northern Minnesota replaces an old non-insulated structure. From the existing cabin to the new iteration the orientation was shifted from parallel to the lake to perpendicular. The longer plan facing south and looking toward the restored old cinder block sauna allows the east end to be fully glazed without visual obstruction. It provides a south facing deck and a welcoming entry under the cantilevered second floor.

This secluded retreat is on a West facing shore of Lake Superior. At the end of a short forested driveway a storage building and woodshed structure form a gateway which marks entry to the site. Proceeding to the cabin a long South facing deck supplemented with fireplace provides a warm sunny space for the often cool days on the coldest of Great Lakes. A cantilevered screen porch above creates a shaded area for the relatively few hot days and acts as a rain/snow cover for the main entrance.

Despite being the busiest library in Minnesota, this building was dark, unwelcoming, dated, and inefficient. A much-needed renovation and second floor expansion completely transformed the 1990s building. MSR Design's work, LEED Gold certified, uses the addition of daylit open spaces and views to the outside to accomplish this transformation.
