Our aim for Birch Tree house was to create a gentle sculptural but robust family home set amongst a beautiful restful garden. The Design Brief was to create a 5 Bedroom home with various family areas maximizing the long north aspect leading towards a beautiful pool. Our approach both internally and externally was to create a dialogue of poetic curved volumes, and light and delicate details as a background canvas for busy family life. The volumes of space are soft sculptural forms that overlap and intersect creating workable family zones. Natural light and soft materials were selected to create a chiaroscuro of light and shade. The finishes were deliberately refined and tonal. The texture is the main player. Natural limestone, oak timber floor, polished plaster walls, and linen curtains were the understated palette.

Located on a steeply sloping block high above the Great Ocean Road. The house is both intensely private and outward-looking. Screened off from the street by a minimalist façade, its unique northern orientation takes full advantage of the 180-degree views towards Bass Strait and the Separation Creek valley.

Hawthorn Villa is a villa unit in a group of four, reconfigured to accommodate the owners needs for additional functions within the home and improved connections to its outdoor areas. Generous planning setbacks provide the street-facing home with a surprising large front garden for a unit. It also enjoys a more typical smaller rear courtyard that faces north. The design aims to use the living areas as a funnel between both of these outdoor spaces creating a home experience amongst garden.

Our friend Hoa took a huge risk and bought the oldest building she could find. The 150 year old kings arms hotel on Queensberry Street didn’t have a straight bone in it. After many design iterations, curved walls allowed the plan to divide the small and awkward existing title. As the curves were the key when dividing the space, we found that it also connected perfectly to the existing archway that once connected the old pub to the boarding house. We wanted to create a sense of height adding a third hidden bedroom into the existing roof space of the old pub. By removing the ceiling lining and structure from upstairs, this allowed us to create a whole new level and space, whilst making a double height space that connects the upper level to the open mezzanine.

The extension to this inner-city heritage home is intended as a tidy, fastidious timber clad structure. An opportunity for meticulous details. The inhabitants moved from their own homes into this new house together; consolidating their extensive art collections and large extended families. Art, furniture and objects were scheduled and located during the planning process. The Dining Room comfortably accommodates twenty-four diners, located in a prime position facing the garden, and features an acoustically treated ceiling.

The Glen Iris House is a two storey modern extension to a Californian Bungalow on a good sized block in suburban Melbourne. The original weatherboard house sits on a sloping site and is elevated at the front and level with the ground at the back with no relationship to the outside.
