An interpretive center is a building devoted to a didactic-pedagogic perspective that seeks, above all, to make known "in situ" space, theme, or content in which it appears. Thus, the Interpretation Centre of the Faja da Caldeira de Santo Cristo is part of a global intervention idea that the Regional Secretariat of the Environment and the Sea has been developing in the region, which was established with a set of criteria for the suitability of the place, as well as a specific program that appeals to the "internalization", dissemination and development of the natural heritage in question./

The option of guiding the habitable compartments in only one direction: east / west, developed a set of porticos that intercalates the program. By the separation of these porticos it was achieved a volumetric fragmentation proposing alternate lights and shadows, in a game between interior and exterior. This set of fullness and emptyness stabilizes and de-hierarchizes the house, creating a unified and cohesive image.

The Past
This project is clearly a story – a story made up of stories of the sea and whale hunting in the Azores; a story of an island – the clear expression of insularity – closely related to the memory of a people and a tradition highly dignified in the past, both in human and professional terms. A story of a Whale Factory in ruins (one of the largest in the Azores), pleading to be more than a long forgotten heritage. Pleading to exist. Or resist…

Stuck between land and water, along a strip of terrain under permanent change as times went by, human intervention has grounded its most varied settlements. From the 17th Century onwards the amassing of different plans for this place, the material and technological resources employed on each epoch and the convenience of the granted heritage concur to a series of conversions and extensions.
