How often are irregularly shaped plots dismissed when buying land? In many towns, the land is subdivided into perfect rectangles for construction, leaving plots with unconventional shapes—sharp angles and awkward dimensions—undesirable and in low demand. The architecture studio Tropical Tones, however, has set an example by tackling this challenge. This Tropical Modern residence in Azhiyur Village in Kozhikode, Kerala, is built on an 8-cent trapezoidal plot within the Coastal Regulations Zone, just 100 metres from the National Highway. The proximity to the sea and the narrow corner of the site are typically considered non-negotiable constraints for homeowners. Yet, this family of a young couple and four kids took a leap of faith.

Nestled within this architectural masterpiece's embrace, lilies' symbolic resonance becomes a profound embodiment of purity and tranquility. Enveloped by lush lily ponds, this residence becomes a sanctuary, an oasis of serenity meticulously crafted to offer respite to its inhabitants after the relentless demands of a bustling day. This tropical haven, seemingly suspended in an ethereal equilibrium, is a manifestation of understated luxury, where a palette of varied wooden tones and vernacular-inspired forms converges to create an immersive experience. As one traverses the thresholds of this dwelling, a floating illusion unfolds, an enchanting spectacle that materializes once you cross the bridge, transcending the ordinary into a realm of architectural marvel.

Designing a home for a close friend is indeed a unique and challenging experience, as it blends personal connection with professional creativity. It's akin to pouring your heart and soul into a project because you share a deep understanding of the person's preferences and desires. When Vysakh approached us with his vision for his dream home, it felt as though we were embarking on a shared journey to craft a space that would encapsulate his aspirations and our design philosophy.

The Past: The old beach stage, once stood where the freedom square is now, hosted many historical events and personalities. The beach stage was the most prominent and largest venue for cultural programs and political conventions in the region. The stage though was just a reminiscence of the past with its structure sinking & dilapidating due to aging.
