Creating a new residential community while strengthening town-and-gown connections, The Sojourner Truth Apartments at The Yard provides 442 student beds in 135 apartments in two-, three-, and four-person suite apartments with full kitchens and living rooms. Located just off campus adjacent to Voorhees Mall—the most historic part of the Rutgers University’s College Avenue Campus—The Yard is a result of a creative partnership between the University and the City’s non-profit development agency, New Brunswick Development Corporation (Devco). The programming and planning of the site was the coordinated effort of Facilities Planning and Student Affairs at the University, Devco, and the City, and part of Rutger’s larger College Avenue Redevelopment Initiative.

Michael W. Folonis Architects (MWFA) designed an inspiring healthcare center with a focus on patient experience and sustainability. The award-winning building—slated for LEED Gold certification—is an elegant balance of aesthetics, efficiency, and sensitivity. The massing of the building consists of two great rectangular volumes in a combination of boardformed and cast-in-place concrete, fronted with glass, louvers, and light shelves. The two distinct volumes are joined by a glass box creating a grand atrium bathed in natural light. The imperatives of transparency and function, and the aesthetic of early California Modernism, are all richly evident in the passive solar design, the building skin’s glass and concrete, the interior’s exposed steel, and sweeping sight lines both inside out and outside in.

The two fashion boutiques Mameg and Maison Martin Margiela sit side-by-side, in a single building. Their characters are different. Whereas Mameg creates an atmosphere of domesticity and comfort, Maison Martin Margiela creates a jarring world of collage and reflection. That the two boutiques, linked by a reflected-gold corridor, are so close physically and so distinct atmospherically prompted a simple division. With Maison Martin Margiela opening onto the street and Mameg oriented towards a private garden on the alley side, an existing wooden bow truss roof system acts as the datum. A program bar containing ‘back-of-house' program frees up the rest of the space. Diverse design vocabularies define the two boutiques.
