State Library Victoria, a historic Australian landmark, has officially reopened its doors to the public, revealing extensively transformed library spaces designed by Danish architectural firm Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects and Australian architecture and design studio Architectus. The library comprises 23 individual buildings and occupies an entire city block in Melbourne’s city centre.

Parliament of Victoria Members' Annexe / Peter Elliott Architecture + Urban Design

The new annexe building provides much-needed office accommodation for 102 members of parliament and their support staff. After a century and a half of makeshift and inadequate member’s offices and numerous failed schemes to extend Parliament House, the new building finally solves a long standing accommodation problem. The annexe has been constructed as a separate free-standing building within the eastern gardens of the Parliamentary precinct but is linked back into Parliament House via a bridge, tunnel and laneway connections.

The School’s brief was to create a unique kind of science and technology centre; a facility that will support staff and students today and into the future.

Belmont Community Rehabilitation Centre / Billard Leece Partnership

The Belmont Community Rehabilitation Centre offers an active, goal-focused rehabilitation program in a residential setting. The program focuses on preventing further disability by supporting clients to reduce the chance of relapses and improve their wellbeing. Sited adjacent the Kardinia Health GP Super Clinic (completed by Billard Leece Partnership in 2009) and connected via enclosed pedestrian link to the Community Health Centre with which it shares reception, the Rehabilitation Centre is an important addition to this community healthcare hub four kilometres from Victoria’s.

The recurring ritual that plays out in the journey to the holiday home is integral to the conception of this house: the car and its contained interior; the stop off for provisions in the last town before arrival; getting out and unchaining the entry gate before driving onto the site; the wall that confronts them, the view denied; the welcoming gesture of the front portal wedge; and the final release to the view as one enters the main living spaces.
