Site. SBB is one of Switzerland’s largest landowners. This national railway company owns land in prime locations of the urban centers across the country. This previously underutilized potential of real estate has been increasingly developed in the last years, thus contributing to the densification of urban centers around the main stations of Basel, Zurich, Lucerne, and other cities. Such densification and urban renewal project is the Meret Oppenheim Hochhaus, located in the Gundeldinger Quarter of Basel.

The Eyhof housing estate is located in the midst of the green Albisrieden district, which is part of a garden city extending from Albisgüetli to Schlieremer Berg. Contiguous housing estates constructed in the late 1940s define the surroundings of the Eyhof. Residential buildings arranged in rows are carefully embedded in the topography, forming flowing green spaces. The neighbouring open spaces of the In der Ey and Letzi schoolhouses supplement the district’s spatial structure with park-like facilities. Scattered buildings from subsequent decades notwithstanding, the district exhibits a homogeneous architecture.

Designed by the architectural practice of IttenBrechbühl and constructed by the main contractor HRS, Modern Times Hotel enjoys a perfect location amongst the hills above the town of Vevey. It sits adjacent to the motorway for easy access by car, only a stones-throw from the new Charlie Chaplin Museum with the mountains, the heart of Vevey itself, and the famous UNESCO World Heritage site of the Lavaux vineyards closeby. Thanks to its highly visible location, the buildings seems to welcome its visitors with open arms just after they leave the main road. Modern Times Hotel has become a new gateway to the region and is emblematic of Charlie Chaplin’s presence in Vevey.

On the eastern edge of the site, student housing and commercial and service areas provide a clear border on the public plaza. Extending to the south to include the Metro station, shops and restaurants are sheltered by a covered gallery with the hotel and student lodgings above. The large scale of the building is mediated through a series of articulations and variations in height of the different volumes that make up the complex. Only the central bodies of the building are carried up to level eight at the top. The outer facades clad in serigraphed glass and aluminium louvers maintain a clear dialogue with the convention center, the coloured window jambs anticipate the exuberance of the inner courtyard.

The School Centre is part of the extension of the school campus Lättenwiese, which was built in the 70ties. The extension foresees two buildings added on the edges of the campus connecting the old town of Opfikon with the emerging area Zurich North, and thus creating a new urban orientation of the school campus. The low, wide volume of the School Centre refers to the scale of the old town.
