Architects Haworth Tompkins have completed a 12-year transformation of the Grade II* listed Battersea Arts Centre. Begun as an extended, improvisatory collaboration with artists, theatre producers and the local community, the entire former town hall building is now in use for creative and community activity, increasing the number of performance spaces from 4 to 35 and incorporating artists’ bedrooms, a new rooftop office and staff garden, a creative business hub, a community allotment and an outdoor theatre.

Cromwell Place is a membership organisation offering a first-of-its-kind exhibition and working space in central London. The new space is located in the heart of South Kensington’s museum district and housed within five Grade II listed buildings, stretching across 35,000sqft. Designed in 1858 by Sir Charles James Freake, the Georgian townhouses now house 14 unique gallery spaces, permanent and shared offices, open-desks, meeting rooms, viewing rooms, underground storage facilities, and The Club Room. Through the delicate restoration, Buckley Gray Yeoman has created 14 gallery spaces that have been individually renewed to maintain the personality and integrity of the original Victorian rooms, yet discreetly modified to suit the anticipated needs of Cromwell Place's members.

Tintagel House, The Office Group (TOG)’s new flagship flexible workspace on Albert Embankment in Vauxhall, has opened following a major refurbishment by architects Stanton Williams and interior design by Universal Design Studio. Acquired by TOG in 2015 and their largest project to date, the building will offer 95,000 sq ft of serviced office and co-working space, and a wealth of communal spaces including a café, bar, gym, lounge and kitchens.

Located in an area of outstanding natural beauty, within the South Downs National Park, the new house sits on the site of a bungalow that had been in the family for over sixty years. It was important to our client that something of this building’s simple shape would be retained while creating a contemporary home. Together with our client, we wanted to make the most of the views out to the landscaped garden and the South Downs beyond and a connection with the outdoors was essential. This is largely achieved through extensive glazed openings as well as the direct access to the gardens from the living and dining spaces.

Achieving this connection was realised through increasing light levels into the house through doubling the size of the existing kitchen by extending into the shady, under-used side return, and converting the loft into a master bedroom suite to enjoy views over the parkland beyond – a rare privilege in zone 2.

Vaulted House is a new-build four-bedroom family house, located on an infill site, hidden behind a garage door in Hammersmith. It was previously a diesel contaminated taxi garage, surrounded by 11 party walls and overlooked by 24 neighbours. A series of sharply detailed vaulted roofs define different living zones on the open upper-ground floor. Roof-lights at the top of each vault flood the landlocked site with daylight. Large courtyards bring light into the bedrooms on the lower-ground floor. The roofs are covered in a striking chequered pattern of single-ply membrane. The vault geometry repeats in details of the house, including the fireplace, floors, windows and entrance.

Squire and Partners approached their commission to design a private house as a crafted building, sensitive to its Mayfair Conservation Area context but with a unique contemporary presence. Sited at a junction of streets and views, and being physically linked to a listed Georgian wall at the termination of Chesterfield Mews facing Curzon Street, the building responds to a variety of contexts and viewpoints.

The University of Winchester’s brief was to initially provide 8 teaching spaces within a new building for approximately 600 students. The site with an existing 1920’s exam hall, was adjacent to an existing 1970‘s teaching building which had to remain partially operational during construction. Phase 2 of the works, converted a further two lecture spaces to the existing building and provided two additional lecture rooms and open learning space as part of a rooftop extension. As part of the University’s aspiration to drive higher standards of excellence for studying and the student experience, the building was set to achieve BREEAM excellent from the outset of the project. This has seen innovative technology and design used to harness and control passive environmental factors to give a more comfortable and controllable space, thus aid teaching and wellbeing as well as the obvious environmental benefits of natural light, natural ventilation and reduced energy consumption. As well as providing excellent teaching rooms, particular attention was given to the external areas between campus buildings, which form a critical social space and important frontage for the University of Winchester.
