The reason for the Fifties high-rise refurbishment of the building, which was erected in 1956/57, was the high level of asbestos contamination and its poor energy balance. The office building had been valuable before, reports Marco Tschudin of Tschudin Urech Bolt Architekten, but with a sweltering 34 degrees in summer, it was unusable. Many post-war buildings cause similar problems and are replaced under buzzwords like densification, efficiency, or economy. But the administration building was lucky. It still looks - or looks again - almost as it did when it was built. It owes this to its municipal protection status, the sensitivity of the planners, and the willingness of BRUGG Immobilien AG as the building owner to put a little more money in its hand.

The University of Basel's Biozentrum is one of the world's leading institutes for basic molecular and biomedical research and teaching. Located near the Rhine River, the Biozentrum's 72- meter-high tower comprises 19 floors - 16 above ground and 3 below. A floor area of 23,440 square meters houses research facilities, lecture halls, seminar rooms, and scientific equipment for 400 researchers and 900 students. The Biozentrum building by Ilg Santer Architects, Zurich, is the first part of the new campus site where all faculties will be concentrated in one place.

The Allianz Headquarters is a hybrid-office and the pinnacle of a master planned mixed-use district on the edge of Zürich’s city center. Comprised of a 20-story tower and a 5-story annex, these two components are externally linked by a series of four bridges, and vertically linked by numerous interior voids and staircases; as such, the Allianz Headquarters can be experienced as horizontal and vertical landscape of neighborhoods. Fluidly connected to the city center by a multitude of public transportation options, the building encourages the blossoming of twenty-first century office culture, which demands flexibility in space and its use, via its hyper-hybrid programming that amplifies ‘interiority’.
