In search of a tranquil retreat from the pace of city life, a couple chose to build their home in the countryside, while still embracing the joys of outdoor living. They discovered a ten-acre plot in Hatley Township, Eastern Townships of Quebec, once cultivated to produce cereals for livestock. Here, they envisioned a single-story residence that would become their primary sanctuary. Determined to preserve the land's agricultural heritage, they opted for a minimal footprint, honoring its original purpose while ensuring the property's long-term vitality.

Settling into the mountainside - Set on a dramatically steep site, the residence unfolds across two levels, totaling over 700 square meters. The compact, buildable area required blasting through rock, much of which was then repurposed for landscaping and retaining walls. Managing the runoff from the mountainside posed its own challenges, requiring careful water control around the 40-meter-long structure. The landscaping was designed to allow the lush natural vegetation to reclaim its place. Within the municipality of Lac-Tremblant-Nord, strict environmental regulations—such as a ban on visible exterior lighting—ensure the protection of local fauna, including the unafraid deer that roam freely and almost invite touch. True to its philosophy, MU Architecture crafted a roofline that suggests a vast residence, while concealing a lower garden level entirely from view. This understated approach, characteristic of the firm and its clientele, favors elegance and restraint over ostentation.

Binome stands as a bold project offering a contemporary and sensitive approach to urban densification. Unique in its kind, this five-unit residential building provides an enriched living experience through thoughtful architectural quality and respectful integration into its context. The clients—owners of a vacant lot between their duplex and a multi-unit building—envisioned a forward-thinking infill project: to offer high-quality collective housing that would promote cohabitation and intergenerational diversity within the neighborhood. "We dreamed of a building with a different kind of architecture—made up of two volumes and a central courtyard—allowing for more housing, ideally affordable", Sarah-Jeanne Labrosse, co-owner of Binome.

Located in the heart of the Plateau Mont-Royal district, the project consists of the renovation and expansion of a duplex dating from the 1920s. Our project nicknamed ''le Petit Merlot'' owes, among other things, its name to the neighborhood that hosts it, Le Petit Laurier. With its lively shopping street, this neighborhood represents the typical Montreal way of life where relationships between neighbors are built around a good meal. Petit Merlot owes its name to this spirit of conviviality but also to its red clay brick cladding which characterizes the surrounding built environment.

Atelier BOOM-TOWN presents Alizé Residence, perched on one of the many peaks of the Lac Saint-Victor estate in Wentwoth-Nord, Quebec, Canada. The Alizé residence clings to a cliff to better project itself towards the horizon, braving the winds and framing the landscape through its numerous visual openings. Like the arrows under weather vanes that indicate where the wind is coming from according to the points of the compass, the two main volumes of the architectural composition intersect, and the intersection becomes the residence's anchor point to the site at the point where the terrain presents the greatest vertical drop.

Located in the district of Rosemont-Petite-Patrie, near Père Marquette Park, the project consists of the renovation and expansion of a “shoebox”. The typical “shoebox” was erected by the working class in the 1940s and was originally a modest and economical 1-story single-family house. In a desire for heritage conservation, the district classified the “shoeboxes” into different categories of interest. In this case, it was mandatory to preserve the existing façade, but we were allowed to add a second story. To respect the original volume of the shoebox and preserve its heritage values, it was intuitive to propose a set-back second-floor addition. This pronounced recess provides an intimate green terrace on the street side, facing south.

Since its foundation in 2005, our firm has been looking for a workspace that would allow our practice to blossom. How to develop a business near downtown with the limited resources of a small firm and the constant increase in rents and taxes? Moreover, with the current boom in Montreal real estate market, the demand for housing allowing families to stay in the city is constantly growing. In the last ten years, the Rosemont neighborhood has been attracting families who enjoy living close to shops, public transportation, and green spaces. Unfortunately, every year, fewer opportunities are affordable.
