Hawthorn I is an exercise in backyard optimization. A cast of familiar backyard elements like a shed, pool, and studio + activities such as play, relaxation, and retreat are synthesized in a modest site area of 12mx10m. The project brief was for an adaptable space to first be an independent living space for their teenage son, then become a dedicated studio to work from home. This space was to accommodate a kitchenette, bathroom, living and sleeping space. Additionally, they wanted to build a storage shed, workshop, and pool. There was also a young oak tree to be retained as it had great sentimental value to the family, planted by their kids as an acorn from the local park.

The old part of the house has been re-roofed and internally upgraded and now forms the sleeping quarters. The new addition has a kitchen, dining, and living, with a pantry, powder room, and laundry along the southern side. The living area is double-height to maximize light and volume. The first floor has a multi-functional open space and access to an external deck.

The core idea for the renovation of this dark and run-down Edwardian house was to maximise natural light. The Client’s brief stipulated an efficient floorplan over a single level which prioritised ‘light and flow throughout’, ‘respect for the Edwardian features’ as well a preference for ‘curved edges’ and ‘real materials’. The interrogation of this brief led to a strong passive design philosophy and further exploration of the core idea via strategically placed glazing and the effect of light on curved forms and carefully selected materials.

Malvern Garden House is a highly-considered adaption of an existing 1930’s period home in a hilly suburban pocket, with a new pavilion embedded within the terraced garden to the rear. Most fundamentally, the design response seeks to actively reposition the home within its unique site, thereby strengthening and celebrating the bonds of the everyday architectural experience within its immediate, lived-in landscape.

Fitzroy Terrace is an intricate re-working of a previously run-down double-storey terrace in the gritty, northern fringes of Fitzroy. The design itself represents a real ‘obscuring’ between the old and the new through the deliberate play of thresholds and vertical journeys through the internal spaces. This in turn responds to a restrictive site, the solution for which is perhaps best captured in section.
