PARTISANS form materials. In their early projects, they sculpted Cedar for the Grotto Sauna, CNC'd Mahogany for Bar Raval, until very recently at their Canvas House, for which they worked with masons to place over 16,200 bricks onto a custom square-shaped "Voxel-Bond" pattern reminiscent of the dot paintings of artist Larry Poons. Mere months later, in January 2024, Alex Josephson and his team at PARTISANS revealed a digitally fabricated limestone facade for Royal de Versailles Jeweller’s new Rolex boutique in Toronto. "Stone is future heritage," says Josephson, "it's having a renaissance."

Designed for a couple in Calgary, the client asked for a home that would cater to their need for privacy, and their two tortoises. The responding logic is two-fold: (1) the burying of social program as a means to provide privacy with the resultant framing of nature; and, (2) a hovering volume characterized by a perimeter poché wall that structures privacy and animates the interior via the filtration of light. In the first instance, a perimeter is defined via the woods on the north of the site and its suburban condition on the east and west. This boundary is further emphasized through the concrete walls at ground level which define the social spaces.

Located next to the existing Comcast Center, the Comcast Technology Center rises 1,121 feet (341 meters) as the city’s tallest building. The Comcast Technology Center is vertically stepped, with loft-like workspaces and state-of-the-art television studios for NBC10 and Telemundo62, with a 12-story Four Seasons Hotel above. At an urban scale, the project is conceived as a welcoming addition to the neighborhood, integrated with its shops, bars, and restaurants.

The Daniels Building at the University of Toronto embodies a holistic approach to urban design and sustainability. As the new home for the John H. Daniels Faculty of architecture, landscape, and design, its purpose is to engage students and the broader community in dialogue about the built environment. At the center of one of Toronto’s few circular parcels, the project anchors the southwest corner of the University and opens the circle to the public after years of inaccessibility. It restores the historic and forgotten building to its original grandeur while also integrating a new addition.

The University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM), the second-largest campus of the University of Toronto, is set on a park-like campus on the valley of the Credit River, surrounded by a mature forest, approximately 33 kilometers west of Downtown Toronto. Since establishing its first building in 1966, the campus has been comprised of bold architectural statements that have intensified in recent decades as the university responds to increased enrollment with an influx of buildings.
