Our Lady of Victoria Monastery / Localworks

Our Lady of Victoria Monastery was originally established in Kenya in 1952. It hosts a community of monks from the Cistercian Trappist order who moved to Uganda in 2008 following post-election unrest in Kenya. Localworks' architectural proposal followed a requirement to double the existing monastery in size and accommodate a growing community of monks. The design includes a total of four new buildings – Church, Noviciate, Guesthouse, and Gatehouse. All buildings are intricately detailed in clay brick and arranged around three courtyards.

AWF Primary Schools in Karamoja / Localworks

These two primary schools, designed to cater for approximately 350 students each, are located in immediate adjacency to Kidepo Valley National Park in Karamoja, North-eastern Uganda. They form part of the 'Classroom Africa' program of the African Wildlife Foundation. This program aims to provide incentives to the local population to protect wildlife and begin to experience it as an opportunity rather than a threat to their livelihoods. One of the schools is built in the park’s buffer zone and the other in a farming village nearby, both with the ambition to multiply influence among school students and their surrounding communities.

Mustardseed Junior School / Localworks

MJS is a newly founded private initiative with the aim of creating an exemplary kindergarten and primary school that provides an inspirational and practical education to the young children in its care. It is located near Sentema, a village about 20km west of Kampala.The inspiration for the design was to create a ‘large home’ for the children that functions as a comfortable enabling educational environment. The architectural ambition is not programmatically prescriptive, but rather to inspire teachers and students alike to inhabit spaces in multiple and creative ways, to (literally) think outside the box, and to treat the entire school, not just the classroom, as a greater learning environment.

Nile Safari Lodge / Localworks

Nile Safari Lodge is a luxury eco lodge located on the southern bank of the River Nile overlooking Murchison Falls National Park. At one time one of Uganda's best known lodges, Nile Safari Lodge was showing signs of its age and Localworks was commissioned to lead a complete rebuild and upgrade of the facility to bring it in line with changing requirements in the hospitality industry.

Health Education Centre / Ross Langdon + Localworks

The Ross Langdon Health Education Centre is a small community hall located in the village of Mannya in Rakai, South-western Uganda. It provides space for about 150 people, sitting on simple clay tile steps, and for a speaker, standing on a small elevated platform. Adjacent to the hall is a room for private meetings and a store. At the front is a walkway covered by a pergola providing shade for informal gatherings and relaxation.
