At the Alaska Airlines Flagship Lounge in SeaTac International Airport, the door is always open. Travelers seek lounges as an escape from the anxiety, noise, and commotion of the concourse. Traditionally, airport lounges catered to this desire by emphasizing exclusivity: sleek, business-oriented safe havens that prioritized the needs of a privileged swath of travelers. Alaska Airlines sought to transform the lounge typology by providing a warm, welcoming space where all guests could find refuge – to relax, work, refuel and connect – a home-away-from-home with a sense of place deeply rooted in the Pacific Northwest. Programmatically, the lounge is conceived in four zones: Come In, an approachable entry; Help Yourself, a casual bistro; Take a Breath, a haven for peaceful relaxation; and Cut Loose, a cozy bar atmosphere. Lightly separated with an array of oak and twisted metal screens, the spaces flow together.

Elevated Campus. Mount Si's campus is elevated in every sense of the word: educationally, experientially, and literally. The campus nests in a valley defined by two mountains and the Snoqualmie River, which creates a floodway. Responding to these natural conditions, the school is elevated above flood levels, not only safeguarding the facility but also maximizing views of the mountain range. By weaving in social and informal learning spaces at a variety of scales, the design honors individual and group activities equally.

Nathan Hale High School embodies the concept that learning is about creating connections at multiple scales: school-to-community, space-to-space, and face-to-face. However, the pre-cast and cast-in-place concrete structure of the 1960s-era high school was inwardly focused, dark, and did little to support the school’s educational philosophy. A total renovation completed July 2012 helped realize those principles in the built environment, while respecting the existing structural rhythm.

Publicly accessible program spaces include: 116‐seat restaurant, 7,000 SF grocery store, café, conference center, academic support center, health and wellness center and two retail spaces. The project also contains 132 parking spaces for the apartment component only. Two public open spaces are provided; a pocket park anchored around a heritage Elm tree and a courtyard allowing pedestrians to cut through one residence hall at grade.
