Lawrence Public Library / Multistudio

The expansion of a 1970s Brutalist-style library in downtown Lawrence, Kansas has transformed it architecturally, reinventing it as a 21st century civic place. The existing library, designed by Lawrence architecture firm Robertson, Peters Ericson, Williams P.A. and constructed in 1972, was uninviting due to poor thermal performance, difficult wayfinding and a lack of daylighting and openness. Library attendance was down, particularly with younger generations. Through extensive community dialogue, the citizens of Lawrence voiced their thoughts and established key design considerations for the project, including an enhanced children’s area, greater access to technology and an emphasis on environmental sustainability. The citizens recognized the significance of the library’s location in the community and the opportunity it provided to establish a new “place” within the downtown area. Gould Evans responded with a design that addresses the changing role of the library: from book repository to multimedia community hub.

The design team’s research pointed to two primary issues plaguing this growth: a lack of organization, and consequently, a lack of community.

Northwest Missouri State University Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship / Multistudio

The Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship houses an incubator space for start-ups specializing in agricultural research as well as an academic teaching and research facility for related academic fields. These programs are joined by a common collaboration space with shared equipment labs that can be used for informal meeting, and teaming between the private sector incubator tenants and the academic researchers.

Botwin Building / El Dorado

The Botwin Building is located at a busy urban intersection within the Waldo neighborhood of downtown Kansas City. Largely comprised of small businesses, the historic Waldo Theater building, was part of this vibrant neighborhood. In February 2007 the building sadly burned to the ground. The owner, an invested Waldo community member, decided to rebuild immediately. The architects were asked to preserve the scale and footprint of the original building, but to 'replant' the corner, exploring the latest ideas about urban infill and sustainability. The Botwin Building opened its doors in September 2008.
