As much as walls, ceilings, and furniture pieces define the character and perception of an architectural project, doors play a critical role in building that style. Among all the doors used in houses, the front door is the first tangible element that homeowners and visitors will encounter, acting as the pivotal point where architecture greets the user. After all, first impressions are always important; and the entrance door is certainly one that can set the tone for the rest of the interior. However, choosing the right front door for a contemporary house can be difficult, especially with so many design possibilities. Therefore, before making that decision, it is crucial to know what those possibilities are – and how these can transform the front door into a design statement.

The house is located in the subdivision accessible from a suburban arterial road. It has been planned in the strip- shape lot; with narrow width and large depth. In the vicinity are the houses built by house-building companies or local builders. We then aimed to build a house that possesses dignified presence with both designability and coziness in such a cluttered townscape. The exterior is composed of volumes with carefully examined proportion, window layout, and materials. The window with height and the overhang porch emphasize vertical and horizontal lines, making the facade not too much uniform.

The site is located along a highway with a large volume of traffic. A field expands around the site that is adjacent to the concrete factory run by the client, and a traditional Japanese house where the parents reside. Because the environment gives a somewhat mixed-up impression, a house was sought that would produce visual expansion while blocking eyes from surroundings. Thus, I planned a house that aligns its axis with the north side where you can obtain the widest view while laying out the spaces that have their own extensity from the entrance through the backmost terrace. The recess of the symmetric façade composed of the volumes is made into the entrance. The thick and heavy wall positioned at the center adds more sense of depth. It also plays a role of “Eye Stop” that keeps eyes outside from easily coming through.

The site is located along an arterial road that runs through the countryside. In the neighborhood stand private residences and a grove of the village shrine surrounding a passage to the shrine. The building is made of mortar and galvanized steel sheet which reflects dull light, making it look massive. It is laid out to be accommodated within the L-shaped lot and stands to face the shrine on the opposite side.

To meet that request, linkage between exterior and interior spaces were identified to realize a living space that expands toward outside in terms of visual and sensory aspects.
