We created the project on a small landlocked plot of land surrounded by buildings for a family to live there with cats. This is not the first human-plus-animal home project, but it was the first time a project has focused on cats.

Chashitsu, which is the Japanese term for a teahouse or tea room is a construction specifically designed for holding the Tea Ceremony, a traditional Japanese ritual in which the host prepares and serves tea for guests. Teahouses are usually small, intimate wooden buildings, where every detail is intended to help withdraw the individual from the material disturbances of the world.

Walking down a Midosuji main street to the area with mid-to-high-rise residential and commercial buildings, suddenly a residential area filled densely with two storey wooden houses appeared. YMT-house is located in this area and measures just 49.5 square meter with 4m open width and 11m depth. In this limited condition, the client firstly required spacious living room for family of four, and then private rooms, enough storage, and the rooftop. To enrich and enhance life style while meeting all these requirements, the project focuses on the scale difference between each room.

We tried to interpret traditional gabled roofs in new way, because of Kyoto's townscape codes, within the framework of modern dwellings. As Laugier's "Primitive Hut, "gabled roofs hold a sort of fundamental appeal. However, we felt there was a problem in their strong axis of the direction and the fact that sunlight in the house is distributed unevenly. Additionally, we also saw an issue in dealing with the gable's outward thrust.

Located in Nishijin, Kyoto, JURAKU RO is a mixed-use project that includes both residential apartment and a hotel. As the name indicates, this building is located in the site of Old Castle ‘JURAKU DAI’. Street in this area used to be lined with Machiya (Kyoto’s Old townhouse) where traditional waving industry flourished. There are only a few old townhouses remain, and most of the recent apartment building in this area doesn’t seem to contribute to surrounding scenery while their façade is the only element to follow the landscape regulation. In this project, we considered how JURAKU RO could be part of surrounding neighbors, as well as contributing creating Kyoto’s landscape in the present day.
