As cities develop, their historic buildings grow old—how can we integrate heritage architecture into daily life rather than keeping it merely as a trace of memory? The Cool Docks project in Shanghai presents a compelling design possibility. While no one can accurately predict lifestyle changes over the next century, the architects sought to extend the lifespan of their design as much as possible, focusing on a deeply human-centric approach. Originally known as Shiliupu, the Cool Docks served historically as dock warehouses and a livelihood hub for local fishermen. In the last century, the site became the Shanghai Oil and Fat Factory; with industrial restructuring, the buildings eventually fell vacant. By 2007, the Cool Docks had undergone its first round of renovation and programming adjustments, becoming a well-known urban landmark. In 2019, the project reintegrated its external content resources and optimized the site layout for a secondary upgrade. Today, the revitalized Cool Docks is gradually transforming into an art park, a fashion runway, and a creative studio hub for young people. How do we redefine such a place?
