Founded 130 years ago, the Westin Miyako Kyoto is an elegant hotel with a proud history nestled into the foothills of the city’s Higashiyama district. That same elegance and quality were essential in this major renovation and earthquake retrofit of the chapel, which occupies a separate building on the hotel property.

One of the hill-shaped sites scattered around the foot of the mountain surrounding the city of Hiroshima, the site located at the end of the housing complex has three steps of height difference facing the cliff, and has an irregular flat shape. Due to its small site area, it has been used as a parking lot for a long time. Client, who found the site, imaged a rich home with a spectacular view overlooking the city.

It is a house with an atelier built in a quiet residential area where low-rise houses are lined up. In particular, it is located in an area where flat parking lots are concentrated, and it is a pioneered place where you can see the exterior from all sides even though it is in the city, so I thought that it was necessary to have a design with no front and back in consideration of all directions.

The House in Nishisakabe is an ordinary house built in 1984 for a single family in a typical Japanese suburban landscape without a sense of unity. After 35 years, they decided to update the original house to fit to live with a new family. This is the project of the extension and renovation of the house.

This is the residence for family of three, built in a quiet residential neighborhood. In search of a perfect setting ti lead a fulfilling life, the client found a triple tiered, nine-by-twenty two meters plot of land with a tuck under garage. From the very beginning of the project, I envisioned a house with a south-north opening with outdoor spaces: one above the garage, and another on the deepest top tier of the site, where the client wished to create a vegetable garden.

Jun Sakaguchi as a practice director of PTW Architects won a design competition for this small commercial block in Tokyo in 2006. Crowned with a penthouse rising above the 31m height limit but within the set-back line, it glows like finely cut jewellery. Most surrounding buildings are 31m high, so the penthouse enjoys open views from the timber deck terrace to the Tokyo Station area and further up to the Shinjuku district.

This is a summer house situated in the forest. In this house, by "digging a triangle plane into a house figure", the view extending obliquely upward was gained. The request of the clients who are an old couple was "wanting the space in which we can spend free time without doing anything." They wanted a summer house in which they could expose their bodies into the woods as they want, look at the trees and sunbeams shining through the branches, and spend time in the house rather than planning to do something special.

Furthermore, it is also dependant on the location and era of collection that the objects possess their own individuality. The characteristic of this shop is that there is only one of each item, honouring their individuality.
